Garcia Selected to Compete in Arnold Palmer Cup
March 27, 2020 | Women's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior women's golfer Sofia Garcia was selected to compete in the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup on Friday during Golf Channel's selection show on YouTube.
Garcia joins an international squad that will represent 15 different countries announced by Golf Channel on Friday and will compete for the International Team for the second-consecutive year of competition.
"We are thrilled for Sofia and her selection," head coach JoJo Robertson said. "This is such a prestigious event and a very well-deserved selection for her. She loved being a part of the victorious team last year in Little Rock and I know this year's event in Ireland will be just as exciting."
The 2020 iteration of the Arnold Palmer Cup is slated to be held July 3-5 at Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland. The Lahinch Golf Club, originally designed by Old Tom Morris and later redesigned by Dr. Alister MacKenzie in 1926, has held some of the most prestigious championships in golf, including Ireland's oldest amateur championship "The South of Ireland." It most recently played host to the Irish Open in 2019, where 2015 Arnold Palmer Cup Team Europe Member Jon Rahm won the event.
Garcia is currently ranked No. 18 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings on the heels of a junior campaign where she led the Red Raiders with a 71.18 scoring average. She notched four top-three finishes, including an individual title to begin the year at the Trinity Forest Invitational.
The Arnold Palmer Cup is Garcia's second selection to an international amateur competition this year, as she was also chosen to compete in the 2020 Augusta National Women's Amateur Championship at historic Augusta National Golf Club earlier this semester.
More details about the Arnold Palmer Cup can be found on the official website.
