March 06, 2020 | Softball
The Red Raiders combined for 30 runs against Delaware State and Fairleigh Dickinson.
Â
The Red Raiders began the day with a 13-2, five-inning run-rule against Delaware State before a 12-run second inning paved the way for a 17-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson in five innings.
Â
Breanna Russell led the Red Raider lineup with a 4-for-5 outing at the plate and freshman Tori Whillock followed closely behind with three hits. Yvonne Whaley, Shelby Henderson, Heaven Burton, Zoe Jones and Karli Hamilton all finished the day with a pair of hits and six other Red Raiders registered hits.
Â
Jones and Maddie Westmoreland both sent three-run home runs out of the park and Morgan Hornback highlighted the offense with a grand slam against Delaware State.
Â
In the circle, Erin Edmoundson (7-4) picked up a win in game one after striking out five in three innings. Freshman Kamryn Caldwell picked up her first save of the year and fanned two hitters in her second appearance of the year.
Â
GiGi Wall earned the start in game two, but it was sophomore Morgan Hornback who earned the win against the Knights. Hornback limited Fairleigh Dickinson to two hits in three innings while also striking out four hitters.
Â
GAME ONE: TEXAS TECH 13, DELAWARE STATE 2 (5 innings)
Tech started the day with a statement win, where Red Raiders out-hit Delaware State, 11-3. Russell posted a perfect, 3-for-3 outing and eight other Red Raiders recorded hits against the Hornets.
Â
One strikeout in the top of the first paved the way for a three up, three down showing on defense in the top of the first. After Whaley singled to short, Russell powered Tech's first run of the day with an RBI double to center field.
Â
An RBI double from Jones gave Tech a 2-0 lead two batters later and another RBI double put Tech out front, 3-0.
Â
Neither team was able to score in the second inning but, after a quiet top of the third, the Tech lineup came alive in the bottom of the inning and powered nine runs off of the Hornets. A walk and a single from Russell made way for an RBI single to right field from Hamilton and Kelcy Leach gave the Red Raiders a 7-0 lead when a single developed into an error way out in right field – allowing three runners to score.
Â
Back-to-back walks loaded the bases and Delaware State's third consecutive walk plated Tech's eighth run of the game. In a huge pinch-hit situation, Hornback distanced Tech's lead, 12-0, with the Red Raiders' first grand slam of the season.
Â
Caldwell entered the circle in the top of the fourth and the Tech defense easily handled the Hornets. A single from Blythe and a Delaware State error gave Tech runners in scoring position and Miranda Padilla gave the Red Raiders a 13-run cushion thanks to an RBI single through the left side.
Â
The Hornets cut into Tech's lead, 13-2, with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth, but the Red Raiders responded with three straight outs and Edmoundson moved to 7-4 with the victory. Caldwell earned her first save of the season and Tech finished the game with nine RBI.
Â
GAME TWO: TEXAS TECH 17, FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON 0 (5 innings)
After taking an early 3-0 lead, a 12-run bottom of the second propelled the Red Raiders to a 17-0 shutout in five innings. Whillock led the way with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate while Burton and Henderson picked up a pair of hits. Five other Red Raiders collected hits and the crew combined for 11 RBI and four extra-base hits.
Â
After Wall kicked off the game with a 1-2-3 frame, Jones followed up singles from Burton and Russell with a three-run homer to give Tech an immediate advantage. The Red Raiders held off the Knights once again in the top of the second and Tech put the pedal to the metal in the following frame.
Â
Three consecutive singles from Henderson, Whillock and Burton scored two runs and an RBI triple from Whaley pushed ahead, 6-0. Russell was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat and an RBI double from Hamilton scored one more run and put a pair of runners in scoring position.
Â
An error at short, forced by Jones, scored one more run and a three-run home run from Westmoreland put Tech at an 11-run advantage. A hit batter and singles from Henderson and Whillock loaded the bases shortly after, and a bases-loaded walk to Whaley plated Tech's 12th run of the game. Adding more pressure on the Knight defense, a wild pitch, passed ball and a throwing error allowed three more runs to cross the plate.
Â
Hornback took over the circle in the top of the third and she escaped a bases-loaded jam to keep the Knights off the board. After a minor setback in the start of the bottom half, Westmoreland found herself at third base after an error in right field. Alanna Barraza came in to pinch run after Fairleigh Dickinson issued a walk to Leach, and she quickly moved over to second on a passed ball. Racking up her third hit of the game, Whillock pushed Tech to a 17-0 lead thanks to a two-RBI single up the middle.
Â
Hornback and the Tech defense held off Fairleigh Dickinson for the final two innings and Tech clinched the 17-0 run-rule thanks to a total of 12 hits against the Knights.
Â
With the win, Hornback moved to 1-0 on the season and the Red Raiders moved to 13-9 overall.
