Garcia Tabbed to WGCA All-America Second Team
April 21, 2020 | Women's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech women's golfer Sofia Garcia was named as a second team All-American on Tuesday by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) for her efforts during her junior campaign.
Garcia's selection was the second of her career as she notched second team honors a year ago and joined former Red Raider standout and LPGA Tour member Kim Kaufman as the only Tech golfers to receive the nod.
Garcia is a consensus top-20 collegiate golfer as she wrapped up the shortened 2019-20 season at No. 16 in the Golfstat individual poll and No. 18 in the Golfweek Magazine rankings. She is the third-highest ranked member of the Big 12 Conference.
With a team-leading scoring average of 72, Garcia made her mark for the Red Raiders this season with six top-10 finishes, including five in the top-five. She began the 2019 fall session with an individual title at the SMU Trinity Forest Invitational in September and tied her own program-record with a 64 in the final round of play.
She totaled 17 rounds of even par or better, a team best. Her efforts caught the attention of international competition as well, as she was invited to compete in the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup for the second-straight year, representing the international squad at Bay Hill Club in December.
Garcia will look to add to her national recognitions in the coming weeks, as Golfweek is set to announce its All-American selections soon.
