May 06, 2020 | Academics, Track and Field
Women produce 27 honorees, men have 20 recognized.
IRVING, Texas – Texas Tech landed a total of 47 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Track & Field Team Wednesday. The women's team led the way with 27 selections, while the men tallied 20.
Â
Four Tech student-athletes – three from the men's team and one from the women's – were given distinguished recognition for holding perfect 4.0 grade-point averages for the term. This included Braden Darrow, Steven Duran and Cole Whatley for the men's team, and Bret Leigh Nance for the women's squad.
Â
"With so many exceptional athletes on this team, it is sometimes really hard to pick just one MVP," began Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Wes Kittley. "Today, there are 47 of them. We tell our team all the time to keep at it and results will come – in the classroom and on the track – and boy did they come. I am so proud of these academic accomplishments and the fact that we have so many athletes working hard and getting recognized by this award."
Â
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
Â
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
