Men's Tennis Garners ITA All-Academic Team Status
July 27, 2020 | Men's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team earned All-Academic Team honors and eight individual awards from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Monday.
The selection marks the fifth-consecutive recognition and the eighth in program history for the Red Raiders. Tech joins Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas as recipients of the ITA's prestigious academic award.
In total, eight Red Raiders were named ITA Scholar-Athletes for the 2019-20 season, a program-best. Jackson Cobb, Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn represent Tech's senior class and were joined by juniors Justin Bloss and Ilgiz Valiev. Sophomores Isaac Arevalo, Franco Ribero and Francisco Vittar round out the list. Tech is the only school in the Big 12 Conference to have more than five representatives.
Thomson's nomination was the fourth in his career as he joins former player Raphael Pfister (2010-13) as the only Red Raider to receive the award on four separate occasions. Both Ribero and Wynn were recognized for the second time in their respective careers.
To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the current academic year (on a 4.00 scale) and be listed on the institutional eligibility form.
To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements: 1.) have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale), 2.) all student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and 3.) all varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year.
