
Tech Sweeps WVU in Season Opener

LUBBOCK, Texas – LUBBOCK, Texas –  Caitlin Dugan led with nine kills while Brooke Kanas had eight kills and four blocks to help lead Texas Tech to a season-opening 25-17, 25-23, 25-22 sweep over West Virginia on Thursday at the United Supermarkets Arena.Â

Tech finished the match with seven blocks and took advantage of 26 errors by the Mountaineers while finishing the match with a .280 hitting percentage. Reagan Cooper added seven kills and three blocks and Emerson Solano led the Red Raiders with 14 digs. Tech had 43 digs in the match with Lindsey Dodson adding 10

West Virginia started the match with the first four points and led 5-2 before Tech went a 6-0 run that started with a Kanas and Sanders block and ended with a Dodson ace. Up 8-5, the Red Raiders would lead throughout the remainder up the first set including taking a 14-12 advantage on a Dugan kill and 21-17 lead on a Cooper kill. Tech ran off five straight points to end the first set with kills from Cooper and Bloss before an error ended the set.

The Red Raiders led most of set two, leading by five two times including taking a 16-11 lead on a Kanas kill before WVU fought back to cut it to 19-18. A Dugan kill gave Tech a two-point lead and the Red Raiders led 24-21 on a set error to setup match point. The Mountaineers wouldn't go quietly though, running off two straight points off kills before Cooper gave the Red Raiders a 2-0 lead with her fourth kill of the match. Dugan and Kanas each had four kills in the second where the Red Raiders finished with a .412 hitting percentage with only two errors.

Tech controlled the third set, taking advantage of three straight WVU errors to lead 10-6 and was up 16-12 on a Sanders kill. The Red Raiders took a 20-15 lead on a Cooper kill and led 24-17 on a Sanders kill. The Mountaineers would score the next five points, including a challenge reversal, before Dugan slammed down another kill to end the match. Solano led Tech with eight digs in the third set, while Dugan had four kills and a block to close it out.

Briana Lynch and Natali Petrova led West Virginia with 11 kills. The Mountaineers were limited to a .143 hitting percentage and finished with seven blocks.

Texas Tech (1-0) and the Mountaineers (0-1) will play again at 6 p.m. on Friday before the Red Raiders travel to play Iowa State next weekend in Ames, Iowa.
