Red Raiders in Fourth After Wind-Shortened Opening Day
September 27, 2020 | Women's Golf
Sofia Garcia will look for her fifth individual title Monday after leading the field through 30 holes
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's golf team opened its season with a strong start to the Schooner Fall Classic as the Red Raiders are in fourth place overall, while Sofia Garcia sits atop the individual leaderboard following 30 holes.
Â
Play was halted on the back nine of the second round after high winds hit the Norman area. The Red Raiders will resume the second round at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning before playing the final 18 holes immediately after.
Â
Garcia will look to close out her fifth individual title of her illustrious career as the junior sank six birdies on the day, including four in the opening round alone. Garcia signed a 4-under-par 66 card to close the morning round and was at even par when the horned sounded to stop play.
Â
Garcia, who is already Texas Tech's career leader for individual wins, enjoys a one-stroke lead over the trio of Reid Isaac of Kansas State and the Baylor duo of Gurleen Kaur and Elodie Chapelet. She led the 56-player field by finishing 2-under on par 4s and ranked tied for second at 3-under on the course's three par-5 holes.
Â
As a team, the Red Raiders combined for a 2-over 280 opening round and were at 5-over with six holes still to go in the second round. Texas Tech enters the final day one stroke behind TCU for third place and five back of North Texas in second. Baylor was 9-under to easily lead the 11-team field, which features only two non-Big 12 members in North Texas and Arkansas State.
Â
Besides Garcia, Cecilie Nielsen is in a tie for 19th place at 3-over for the tournament, while Anna Dong and Amy Taylor trail closely behind at 5-over and 6-over, respectively. Pyrene Delample, making her collegiate debut as a Red Raider, is 10-over for the tournament despite a much-improved second round where she is currently only 1-over.
Â
Texas Tech will tee off from the par-4 4th when play resumes Monday morning. Live results can be found throughout the round at www.Golfstat.com.
