Sports Performance Center to play host to nation’s top meet Friday and Saturday.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Sports Performance Center's track has been heating up in recent weeks, and Friday and Saturday's Texas Tech Invitational will not give it a chance to cool down. Tech will play host to nine schools with an additional handful sending multis athletes in what will be the smallest and most competitive meet Lubbock has seen this year in terms of competing athletes.
Head coach Wes Kittley's squad will host Friday and Saturday what is set to be one of the premiere meets in the country in the Texas Tech Invitational & Multis. Visiting programs include Big 12 competitors Baylor, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and TCU. A strong group of non-conference visitors will be highlighted by Arizona, Arizona State and Texas A&M.
Aside from Kansas, all of the above listed teams will be sending multis competitors to Lubbock this weekend as well. Although not bringing a full team, Texas will send multis athletes, too.
"We've got almost everybody from the conference," said Kittley. "And of the three meets so far, we'll have more people competing for us than we have had. We'll be at full strength, and it's going to be a great competition."
Each of Tech's four world leaders will suit up this weekend, three of whom will be competing in their strongest event. Ruth Usoro, who in the season opener broke the Nigerian record with the second-farthest triple jump mark in NCAA history, will triple on Friday evening. Monae' Nichols, who holds the world lead in the long jump, will triple alongside Usoro before long jumping Saturday. World 800m leader Takieddine Hedeilli, whose 1:45.98 in the opener broke the Algerian indoor record, will look to go even faster in what is set to be a fantastic race Friday evening. Courtney Lindsey rounds out the Tech world leaders suiting up in the Double T, but he will not run in the 200m. Instead, the JUCO transfer will run the 60m – for which he sits fourth in the world – as well as the 4x400 relay.
Friday will begin with the multis at 11 a.m., followed by field events at 3:30 p.m. and running at 5 p.m. Multis will get Saturday's action started at 10 a.m. before track and field events begin at noon.
The meet will be streamed live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
