Lady Raider Tennis Sweeps Season-Opening Doubleheader

EL PASO, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis team opened its dual season on Sunday, picking up convincing wins over Arizona and UTEP at the El Paso Tennis Club.

TECH STARTS STRONG IN WIN OVER ARIZONA
The day opened against the Wildcats, who began the weekend 2-0 with wins over New Mexico State and UTEP. The Lady Raiders, however, struck first by taking wins on the second and third doubles lines to take an early 1-0 lead.

Lisa Mays and Margarita Skriabina picked up a 6-3 win over Gitte Heynemans and Khim Iglupas on court two for the trio's fourth win in as many matches together this season. Oliva Peet and Camryn Stepp teamed up for the first time this season, going on to take down Arizona's Abby Amos and Kayla Wilkins, 6-4, on court three.

The Lady Raiders kept it rolling in singles, getting wins from Mays, Peet and Kaitlin Staines while only giving up one loss to quickly close out the Wildcats.

Mays earned a 6-3, 6-1 win on court one in her first match of the day, taking down Kayla Wilkins. Staines made quick work of Arizona's Jelena Lukic on court two, defeating the Wildcat, 6-1, 6-0, for her fifth singles win as a Lady Raider.

After dropping her first set, Peet came back to snag a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Khim Iglupas to help the Lady Raiders clinch their first win of the year.

LADY RAIDERS EARN SECOND WIN OF THE DAY
The Lady Raiders came back to the El Paso Tennis Club later in the afternoon for a bout with the Miners, and would go on to tally the road sweep in a 4-0 win.

In doubles, Tech once again clinched a quick point picking up wins on lines one and two to take the 1-0 advantage heading into singles. Kaitlin Staines and Lisa Mays defeated Kathleen Percegona and Thassane Abrahim, 6-1. Miller and Skriabina notched a 6-3 win over Lina Sachica and Veronika Lebisova.

The Lady Raiders carried their momentum into singles, where they picked up a trio of straight-set wins to lock up their second win of the day and a 2-0 start to the dual season.

Mays tallied her second singles victory of the day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sachica on court one, moving to 4-1 this spring.

Nell Miller picked up her first win of the day in a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Eve Daniels, while Peet moved to 2-0 on the day in singles action with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lyric Bonilla.
