No. 24 Red Raider Tennis Announces 2022 Spring Schedule
October 28, 2021 | Men's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 24 ranked Texas Tech men's tennis team released its spring schedule on Thursday which features matchups against 15 nationally ranked opponents. After a stellar 2020 spring campaign, which saw Tech advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament, the Red Raiders tennis team will host 11 matches with six being against nationally ranked opponents.
"We are excited for another season of competing in the best region in college tennis and in the Big 12 which had two of the final four teams in NCAA's last season," head coach Danny Whitehead said. "We also have a strong schedule of competition against teams outside of our region and conference with strong teams coming to our home courts. As a team, we will have the opportunity to be tested and needing to play consistently at a high-level week in and week out - and this challenge is one that we are all excited for. We love playing in front of our home crowd and on our home courts and we will look to engage our tennis community this entire season."
The Red Raiders will open the spring with a double header against two in-state opponents in ACU and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (Jan. 13) at the McLeod Tennis Center. The Red Raiders will then embark on a four-match slate against top 50 ranked opponents beginning with hosting No. 45 SMU and then departing for the 14th annual International Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Weekend (Jan. 29- Jan. 31) in College Station. During the ITA Kickoff Weekend, Tech will play No.8 Texas A&M, No.16 Arizona and No.25 UCLA in a round robin style tournament.
After two non-conference matchups at Loyola Marymount (Feb.5) and No. 50 Utah, (Feb.6) Tech will return home to host both New Mexico State and Louisiana-Lafayette (Feb. 12). The Red Raiders will then return to Dallas to face No. 42 LSU before a four match homestand, including three nationally ranked opponents: No. 48 Denver (Feb. 26), No. 46 Tulsa (Feb. 27), No.37 Wichita State (Mar. 5) and UTSA (Mar. 6). The team will then head to Tempe and compete in the ASU Spring Break Tournament. At the end of March, the Red Raiders will conclude their nonconference slate traveling to No. 41 Middle Tennessee (Mar. 25).
In April, the Red Raiders will open with back-to-back, top five road matchups at No. 5 TCU (Apr. 1) and No. 3 Texas (Apr. 3). Tech will conclude Big 12 conference play with three straight home matches versus ranked opponents: No. 28 Oklahoma (Apr. 8), No. 22 Oklahoma State (Apr. 10) and No. 2 Baylor (Apr. 16).
Tech's roster will be flush with experience and leadership with the return of senior Illgiz Valiev, juniors Issac Arevalo, Dimitrios Azoidis, Franco Ribero and sophomore Reed Collier. The already deep lineup will also feature newcomers: transfer sophomore Olle Wallin and five-star freshman Takeyasu Sekiguchi.
