February 15, 2021 | Men's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech has slid back to No. 15 in the Associated Press Top 25, No. 11 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll and is currently at No. 14 in the NCAA NET Rankings going into a stretch of four games in seven days.
The Red Raiders (14-6, 6-5 Big 12) are scheduled to return to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday against TCU before playing the Horned Frogs on Thursday in Fort Worth. The back-to-back matchup will be followed by road games at No. 23 Kansas on Saturday and at Oklahoma State next Monday, Feb. 22 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Tech had risen to No. 7 in last week's AP Top 25 following a three-game winning streak over LSU, Oklahoma and Kansas State, but a home loss to West Virginia last Tuesday dropped the team eight spots.
Gonzaga (20-0) remains the top-ranked team in the nation followed by Baylor (17-0, 9-0 Big 12), Michigan (14-1), Ohio State (17-4) and Illinois (14-5) in the top-5. Houston is at No. 6 this week, while the Big 12 is also represented by No. 9 Oklahoma (13-5), No. 12 Texas (13-5), No. 13 West Virginia (14-6) and No. 23 Kansas (15-7). Just outside the poll is Oklahoma State which is receiving the most votes outside the Top 25.
The Red Raiders have been ranked throughout the season, starting at No. 14 in the AP Top 25 Preseason Poll before ascending to No. 10 on Jan. 25 and then to No. 7 last week. The team has not fallen back past No. 18 this season.
Statistically, Tech ranks fourth in the nation with a 5.8 turnover margin advantage this season and is fifth with 347 made free throws. Limiting opponents to only 62.7 points per game through 20 contests leads the Big 12 and is 23rd nationally while forcing 16.9 turnovers per game from opponents has them at No. 17 in the country. Mac McClung leads the Big 12 with 343 total points and is second with 87 made free throws. He's also leading the Big 12 with 19.5 points per game in conference play and with nine games of 20 or more points.
