February 22, 2021 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis team expanded its win streak to four on Monday at the McLeod Tennis Center, sweeping New Mexico, 4-0.
The Lady Raiders (6-1) made quick work of the Lobos, picking up two quick doubles wins to take the doubles point before going on to win three straight-set singles matches on the way to their second-straight sweep. Overall, the match was finished well within two hours.
Texas Tech won doubles with victories on the top two courts. Nell Miller and Kaitlin Staines defeated New Mexico's Yue Lin Chen and Hsuan Huang, 6-1, for their second win of the week. Olivia Peet and Margarita Skriabina knocked off Natasha Munday and Danielle Quevedo, 6-1, to clinch the point for Tech. Peet and Skriabina moved to 2-0 together on the season, while Miller and Staines moved to 5-3 as a duo.
Tech was dominant in singles, taking first sets on all six courts and not dropping a single set on the day.
Nell Miller put the first point on the board for the Lady Raiders, winning by injury default after Hsuan Huang was forced to retire due to injury; however, Miller was in firm control throughout the match, and led, 6-0, 4-1, when Huang retired. In all, Miller dropped only three games on the weekend and is now 3-2 in dual play.
Shortly after Miller's win, freshman Metka Komac closed out her match in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hsiang-Wen Huang at No. 6 to stretch the Tech lead to 3-0. It marked Komac's second straight-set win of the weekend, and moved her to 5-1 overall this season and 3-0 in dual matches.
Bojana Marinkov clinched the win for the Lady Raiders, dropping Myu Kagayama, 6-4, 6-1, on court five to notch Tech's fourth point of the day. It marked Marinkov's second dual win of the season.
When the match was suspended, all three Lady Raiders still on the court were within two games of clinching their matches.
The Lady Raiders will be back at the McLeod Tennis Center this weekend to open Big 12 play against TCU this Saturday at noon.
