Red Raiders to Compete in San Antonio
February 28, 2021 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 21-ranked Texas Tech men's golf team returns to competition this week at The Cabo Collegiate which is being played at TPC San Antonio's Oaks Course. The 54-hole tournament is Monday-Wednesday with an exemption for the medalist to compete in the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open. Â
Due to international travel restrictions, the The Cabo Collegiate was relocated from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to San Antonio this year. The Red Raiders will be represented this week by Ludvig Aberg, Garrett Martin, Baard Skogen, Carl Didrik Meen Fosaas and Kyle Hogan. TTU senior and two-time All-American Sandy Scott is still working through a wrist injury. Aberg is coming off winning his first individual collegiate tournament by claiming co-champion honors at The Prestige two weeks ago in a tournament where the Red Raiders finished eighth of 24 in their spring opener.
Texas Tech will begin the tournament at 8 a.m. on Monday and is paired with Arizona, Oklahoma State and Abilene Christian.
A sophomore from Sweden, Aberg shot 4-under to finish in a three-way tie for the title. He is currently at No. 4 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking while Scott is No. 8. Tech is the only collegiate golf team with two players in the top-10 of the WAGR. Martin returns to his hometown to compete where he was a four-time all-region and all-district selection at San Antonio Johnson HS.Â
Tech will be competing in San Antonio this week against No. 1 Arizona, No. 3 Arizona State, No. 4 Florida State, No. 7 Oklahoma, No. 8 Oklahoma State, No. 10 Texas, No. 15 Texas A&M, No. 23 Houston, No. 27 Baylor, No. 30 Stanford, No. 31 Arkansas, No. 64 UTSA, No. 82 Cal, No. 101 ACU and No. 150 Rice in the prestigious event in the new location.
The Valero Open is scheduled for March 29-April 4. The Valero Texas Open is the sixth-oldest professional tournament in golf worldwide, the third-oldest on the PGA TOUR and the longest held in the same city. In 2022, the tournament will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
"We're excited to support golf at the college level and to have such an elite field of student athletes playing our tournament course here in San Antonio," said Larson Segerdahl, Valero Texas Open Executive Director. "From our perspective, it makes great sense to reward the talent and skill of the top finisher in this year's Cabo Collegiate at TPC San Antonio with an opportunity to test themselves next month on the same course against the world's best."
The Red Raiders will remain in Texas for their next tournament too, playing at the Texas Invitational (March 15-16) in Austin.
