LADY RAIDER RECAP: Texas Tech 83, Kansas State 75
February 03, 2021 | Women's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas – Led by double-doubles from Vivian Gray and Khadija Faye, the Texas Tech Lady Raider basketball team came back from down 13 in the fourth quarter to take down Kansas State on Wednesday night at United Supermarkets Arena.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior Vivian Gray was her All-American self in a 28-point, six-rebound, 10-assist performance—also adding a steal and a pair of blocks. The Lady Raiders also got a breakout game from freshman post Khadija Faye.
Â
Matched up against one of the best post players in the conference in Kansas State's Ayoka Lee, Faye was undeterred, going for career highs of 20 points and 14 rebounds on 9-of-12 shooting, while also blocking a couple of shots, swiping a steal and dishing off a pair of assists.
Â
Gray and Faye were two of the Lady Raiders' four double-digit scorers as Najé Murray hit a season-high five threes, including a number of triples in big moments which kept the Lady Raiders afloat while Kansas State was trying to create separation. Senior Maka Jackson had 10 points and seven rebounds in the win, along with a steal.
Bryn Gerlich had six assists on the night, along with three rebounds, four points and a decisive steal in the closing seconds of regulation. Lexi Gordon struggled to find her rhythm but helped in many other facets, with six rebounds, an assist and a big block in the fourth period.Â
Â
The Wildcats lead stood at 58-47 heading into the fourth quarter and expanded to 13 after Christianna Carr opened the fourth quarter with a steal and bucket. Tech would repeatedly draw the deficit back down to eight, then seven, before Kansas State eventually stretched the lead back to double digits.
Â
Finally, with 3:13 on the clock, Tech answered a Lee bucket with one from Faye to pull within eight. Vivian Gray followed, hitting three free throws to cut the deficit to five with under two minutes to play. With under a minute to go, Gray hit a layup and, on the next possession, a free throw to cut it to a one possession game: 71-69 with 39 seconds to play.
Â
After Gray missed the second of two free throws, Kansas State gathered the rebound and marched toward halfcourt against a Lady Raider press. As a 10-second violation neared, the Wildcats rifled a pass that Bryn Gerlich intercepted and cashed in on the other end to tie the game and eventually push the game to overtime after the Lady Raiders forced a tough shot on Kansas State's would-be game winner.
Â
After the fourth quarter dust cleared, Gray had 23 points—11 of which she scored in the fourth period to lead the Lady Raiders back.
Â
Overtime was all Texas Tech, nearly from the jump. After ending the fourth quarter with 10 unanswered points, the Lady Raiders opened the overtime period on a 9-0 run to seize control of the game and essentially put the Wildcats away.
Â
Overall, the Lady Raiders outscored the Wildcats, 36-17, over the fourth period and overtime.
