
Lady Raider Tennis Sweeps Kansas, 4-0

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis team earned its second win in a row and third Big 12 win on Sunday afternoon at The Falls Country Club, sweeping Kansas, 4-0.

With the match being moved indoors and only having access to four courts at a time, the Lady Raiders (9-3, 3-0 Big 12) were able to quickly sweep the match with a strong effort in doubles and three straight-set victories in singles.

In doubles action, Tech got wins on courts one and three to quickly take a 1-0 lead. Lisa Mays and Kaitlin Staines won their third in a row, dropping Sonia Smagina and Vasiliki Karvouni, 6-1, to earn the first win of the day. Metka Komac and Olivia Peet clinched the point for the Lady Raiders, ousting Carmen Roxana Manu and Tiffany Lagarde, 6-4, to help put Tech up, 1-0, to start.

Moving onto singles, the Lady Raiders were able to keep rolling with Margarita Skriabina, Lisa Mays and Nell Miller each picking up wins to clinch the sweep.

Skriabina stretched the lead to 2-0 with a dominant, 6-1, 6-1 win over Carmen Roxana Manu on court three. Skriabina has been a force for Texas Tech all spring, going 9-0 in dual singles matches and 11-1 in singles overall to help bolster the Lady Raider singles lineup.

Mays stayed hot as well, winning her third in a row while moving to 8-1 overall in a 6-2, 6-1 drubbing of No. 81 Sonia Smagina. It moved the freshman to 2-0 in ranked singles matches this season.

Finally, Nell Miller clinched the victory for Texas Tech, dropping Vasiliki Karvouni, 6-1, 6-3, to move to 7-3 overall this spring.

The Lady Raiders will be back in action on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center when they play host to SMU to close the homestand.
