March 16, 2021 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis team earned its third-straight win on Tuesday, closing out an undefeated homestand with a 4-0 sweep of SMU.
The win marked the team's third sweep of the week, as the Lady Raiders outscored their three opponents during the extended weekend homestand, 15-0, by team score.
Tuesday's doubles point was hotly contested, but it was Tech that came out on top with wins on courts one and three to take a 1-0 lead into singles. Kaitlin Staines and Lisa Mays struck first, knocking off SMU's Jackie Nylander and Hadley Doyle, 6-4. It marked the tandem's fourth-straight win.
On court three, Olivia Peet and Metka Komac came back from a 3-0 deficit to win six of the match's final seven games to pick up a 6-4 win over Winslow Huth and Nicole Petchey, and clinch the point for the Lady Raiders.
In singles, both teams took three first sets apiece as the Lady Raiders and Mustangs continued to battle; however, Texas Tech finished off three straight-set matches to lock up the 4-0 victory.
Margarita Skriabina wrapped up her match first, defeating Winslow Huth on court three, 6-3, 6-2, to stretch the Lady Raider lead to 2-0. It marked Skriabina's 10th singles win of the dual season and moved her to 12-1 overall on the year.
Mays followed shortly after, handling Jackie Nylander, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1. The reigning Big 12 Player of the Week is now 11-2 overall on the season, 9-1 in dual matches and an impressive 8-1 in the top singles line this year with two ranked victories.
Lady Raider Nell Miller came up with the clincher on court four, holding off Claudia Bartolome, 6-1, 7-5, to close the match. It marked Miller's third-straight win and moved her to 12-8 overall this season and 8-3 in dual matches.
Tech will continue Big 12 play this weekend when the team hits the road to face No. 42 Iowa State at 3 p.m. on Friday.
