Texas Tech Tops Florida Atlantic for Ralph O’Connor Rice Invitational Title
March 20, 2021 | Men's Tennis
HOUSTON – The No. 26 Texas Tech men's tennis team secured first place at the 62nd Ralph O'Connor Rice Invitational by defeating Florida Atlantic 4-0, and extending their match win streak to 8 (10-2 overall).
Both teams came out ready to compete for the doubles point, with the Owls' striking first. Tech's Dimitrios Azoidis and Ilgiz Valiev evened the score with a 6-4 win over Hunter Robbins & Finn Stodder. The gritty play of Parker Wynn and Franco Ribero proved to be too much for Filip Krolo and Maxime Larpraille, as they secured the doubles point for the Red Raiders with a 6-4 win.
The top half of the singles lineup proved to be the difference maker for Tech. Reigning Big 12 Tennis Player of the Week, Ilgiz Valiev added to Tech's tally by defeating Kevin Huempfner 6-4, 6-3. Parker Wynn, playing in the number one slot, soon followed besting Maxime Lapreille 6-4, 6-4. The Red Raider's Franco Ribero sealed the trophy for Tech, overtaking the Owls' Filip Krolo 7-5, 6-2.
"Winning a tournament is always special. We won both matches 4-0, but neither match came easily." Texas Tech head coach Danny Whitehead reflected on the weekend. "We played big in the right moments, and got pushed in each match, but the guys did what they've been doing well this season and kept going. Keep fighting. Finding a way."
Up Next: The Red Raiders will head to Albuquerque to face New Mexico on March 27. Match and schedule updates available on the Red Raider tennis Twitter and Instagram accounts (@TexasTechMTEN).
