Texas Tech Picks Up a Pair of Road Wins Against SMU

Four Red Raiders matched or broke career-highs in strong offensive showings.
DALLAS – Multiple Red Raiders put on career-performances as Texas Tech (9-13) picked up two five-set road wins against SMU (8-6) on the weekend.
Senior Samantha Sanders led the way for the Red Raiders with 54 kills over two matches. She tallied a career-high 26 kills in Friday's match before besting her career mark with 28 kills on Saturday.
Reagan Cooper tied her career high with 15 kills Friday and set a new career best Saturday with 17 kills.
Sophomore Caitlin Dugan also broke her career-high with 18 kills Saturday after tallying 16 kills on Friday.
Setter Alex Kirby added 109 assists in two matches, tying her career high of 58 on Friday while adding 51 Saturday.
Texas Tech 3, SMU 2
SMU took the first frame, 25-22 without ever surrendering the lead. After falling behind 20-14, the Red Raiders mounted a comeback, scoring eight of the next 11 points to pull within two of the Mustangs. Tech fought off one set point, but SMU responded with a kill to close out set one.
Tech responded claiming set two, 26-24, winning eight of the final 12 points. A three point stretch from SMU put the Mustangs in front 19-17 and forced a Texas Tech timeout. The Red Raiders then answered with a 4-0 run to regain the lead at 23-21. With the match tied at 24, Sanders notched back-to-back kills to give Tech the set two win.
The Red Raiders took set three, 25-21 behind a 6-0 run that gave Tech its largest lead of the set at 17-9. SMU made a 6-0 run at the end of the set, but the Red Raiders closed the third set with a kill by Cooper.
The Mustangs won set four sparked by an early 5-0 run to take the early lead at 14-9. The Red Raiders hung around in the set, but the Mustangs would tally eight of the final twelve points to force the deciding set.
Tech won seven of the final nine points in the fifth frame to win the set 15-12 and the match three games to two.
Sanders and Kirby each tallied double-doubles in the match. Sanders added 13 digs to her 26 kills for her eighth double-double of the season. Kirby's 12 digs and 58 assists marked her seventh double-double.
Texas Tech 3, SMU 2
Tech claimed the first frame, 25-21 in a back-and-forth set that saw SMU lead by as much as five at 14-9. The Red Raiders took the lead late in the set with a four-point rally sparked by a kill from Cooper. Tech won 10 of the final 13 points to take the opening set.
SMU responded winning the second frame, 25-23 in a close set where the largest lead for either team was only four. The Red Raiders fought off a pair of set points before the Mustangs tallied the final kill to tie up the match.
Set three went to the Mustangs, 25-21 after SMU won five of the final seven points. Tech jumped out to the early lead, up 7-3 off a four-point run. SMU fought back and traded points with the Red Raiders, eventually taking the 17-16 lead and did not look back the rest of the set.
The Red Raiders took the critical fourth set comfortably 25-17 after a 4-0 scoring run that included back-to-back aces from Kirby that gave Tech its largest lead at nine.
Red Raiders turned it on in the deciding set, going on a 4-0 scoring run to take an 8-4 lead. Tech would go on to win four of the final six points to win the match three sets to two.
Sanders dominated the attach once again, tallying a career high 28 kills combined with 12 digs to notch her team high ninth double-double on the season.
Kirby added her eighth double-double of the season, filling the stat sheet with 51 assists, 13 digs, three aces and three kills.
