March 05, 2021 | Women's Tennis
NORMAN, Okla. – The Texas Tech women's tennis team dropped its first match in nearly a month on Friday morning, falling at Oklahoma, 5-2, at the Headington Tennis Center.
Â
The match began with doubles, where the Lady Raiders and Sooners traded blows in a thriller of a doubles point. After Oklahoma picked up a win on court three, attention turned to the front two courts which were both knotted up at five games apiece.
Â
On court two, Nell Miller and Margarita Skriabina came back from down 4-2 to force a tiebreaker that they would win to knock off Martina Capurro and Camila Romero, 7-6(5). On court one, Kaitlin Staines and Lisa Mays were in a battle with one of the top doubles teams in the Big 12 in Carmen and Ivana Corley, trailing 6-5 and trying to force a tiebreaker. Mays and Staines came up just short, however, as Oklahoma took the doubles point and carried a 1-0 lead into singles.
Â
In singles play, Lisa Mays took her first singles loss of the dual season on court one, falling to Carmen Corley, 6-2, 6-2, to give the Sooners a 2-0 lead.
Â
Oklahoma stretched its lead to 3-0 on court two after Kaitlin Staines fell, 6-2, 6-3, to Dana Guzman, before clinching the win on six with a 7-5, 6-1 win from Kianah Motosono over Texas Tech's Metka Komac on court six. It was Komac's first loss in dual singles action this season.
Â
With the match clinched in favor of the Sooners, Tech picked up a couple of points from Skriabina and Miller. Skriabina took her match in a third-set super tiebreaker, 10-6, over Ivana Corley before Miller used a dominant third set to close out Martina Capurro, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.
Â
The Sooners scored one last point with Marcelina Podlinska winning a third-set tiebreaker, 10-7, over Olivia Peet.
Â
The Lady Raiders will be back in action this Sunday when they travel to Waco, Texas, for a tough nonconference test at No. 15 Baylor.
