Aberg Earns Thunderbird Collegiate Co-Champion Honors

PHOENIX, Arizona – Texas Tech sophomore Ludvig Aberg secured his second career championship by shooting 12-under-par at the Thunderbird Collegiate. Aberg, who birdied his final hole on Saturday at the Papago Golf Course, finished in a three-way tie for the title while fellow sophomore Garrett Martin shot 9-under and finished in ninth to give Tech a pair of top-10 finishers in the final regular-season tournament of the year.
The Red Raiders finished at 28-under-par for fourth place after posting rounds of 272-273-279 at the two-day, three-round tournament. TCU won the team title at 34-under, while No. 12 Arizona State finished second at 30-under and No. 3 Oklahoma State took third at 29-under. Tech has now recorded six top-4 finishes this season going into the Big 12 Championships.
Aberg finished the tournament at 12-under after three straight rounds of 4-under with 67-67-67 – 201 on his scorecard. At even-par in his final round with six holes to play, Aberg birdied four of those final six including on No. 18 with a three on the par 4, 464-yard finishing hole. He made five birdies on Saturday, all coming on par 4s and completed the 54-hole event with 18 birdies. A sophomore from Sweden, Aberg won his first college tournament at The Prestige where he also tied for the championship. He currently No. 5 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
Martin earned his fourth top-10 finish of the season after shooting 9-under for the weekend after posting 65-68-71 – 204. A sophomore from San Antonio, Martin recorded three birdies on Saturday during his even-par round and completed the tournament with 14 birdies. Â
Aberg tied for the individual title with New Mexico's Albert Boneta (65-70-66 -201) and Utah's Blake Tomlinson (65-66-70 – 201).
Carl Didrik Meen Fosaas finished 23rd overall at 4-under after posting 68-69-72 – 209 for the third best Red Raider result. He closed out the tournament with a 1-over round that included two birdies but also three bogeys. Meen Fosaas finished off his final round with two pars. Playing as an individual, Baard Skogen shot 6-under to finish 16th on the leaderboard. He posted 67-69-71 – 207. Skogen was at even-par in the final round after opening the tournament at 4-under in his first round. He made three birdies on Saturday.
Kyle Hogan finished his three rounds at 1-over after shooting a 2-over 73 on Saturday. A senior from Cypress, Hogan shot 72-69-73 – 214 to finish 47th overall. He had two birdies in his final round and 11 for the weekend. Andy Lopez finished the tournament with a final-round at 2-under for a 69. He was 4-under on the front-9 with four birdies and would make one birdie on the back. Lopez finished the tournament with a 73-73-69 – 215 scorecard.
Aberg was 8-under on par 4s in the tournament, while Martin was 7-under on the par 4s. Martin also had top-10 finishes this season at the Maridoe (7th), East Lake Cup (4th) and the Texas Invitational (3rd).
The Red Raiders will now start preparing to compete in the Big 12 Championship which is being played from April 26-28 in Hutchinson, Kansas.
