Cyclones Best Red Raiders in Series Opener
April 30, 2021 | Softball
The Red Raiders dropped game one of the series 4-1 Friday night.
LUBBOCK, Texas – A three-run fourth inning lifted Iowa State (27-18, 2-11 Big 12) over Texas Tech (18-24, 2-14 Big 12) in the series opener Friday night in Lubbock.
The Red Raiders were limited to four hits and were struck out seven times by Iowa State pitcher Ellie Spelhaug.
Erin Edmoundson tallied her 500th career strikeout in the contest, fanning six batters in 3.1 innings of relief work.
Tech had a chance to put runs on the board early, loading the bases to start the bottom of the first after back-to-back walks and a Karli Hamilton bunt single. Spelhaug retired the next three Red Raider's, two via strikeout, to end the threat.
The first Iowa State run of the game came on a bizarre sequence as Missy Zoch struck out the Cyclone batter for what would have been the third out of the inning, but the pitch bounced away from Kelcy Leach allowing the batter to reach safely and score the runner on third.
After a quiet third, the Cyclones plated three in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Iowa State opened the inning with a pair of infield singles and loaded the bases with a walk. A bases-loaded walk brought in one run and a double over the first base bag from Milaysia Ochoa scored two more to give the Cyclones a four-run cushion.
Tech got one run back in the bottom half of the inning on an error that scored Arriana Villa from third. Villa reached base on a leadoff double and was moved to third on a sac bunt from Leach. With two outs, Riley Love hit a chopper to third that the Iowa State third baseman couldn't handle, plating one run to make it 4-1.
The Red Raiders were retired in order in the fifth and sixth inning, leaving one last opportunity in the bottom of the seventh, down three runs. After two quick outs, Yvonne Whaley drew a walk and Payton Jackson singled to short to bring the tying run to the plate, but Spelhaug struck out the next batter to squash the late rally attempt.
Zoch (9-12) picked up the loss in the circle after giving up four runs on five hits with five walks and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work. Edmoundson entered the game in the fourth inning and held Iowa State to just one hit while striking out six.
