IRVING, Texas – For the first time in their careers, Texas Tech volleyball outside hitters Caitlin Dugan and Samantha Sanders earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors, the league announced Thursday.
The pair of awards marks eight straight seasons a Red Raider has earned All-Conference honors.
Dugan, a sophomore from Gilbert, Arizona, finished the season second on the squad in kills (197), kills per set (2.70) and points (229.5). Her .255 hitting clip was the highest on the team for players with at least 250 attempts. She tallied double-digit kills in eight matches with a pair of double-doubles against Kansas.
In Tech's five-set win over No. 13 Iowa State, Dugan tied her career-high with 17 kills which she matched one week later in the Red Raider's 3-1 win over TCU. Dugan followed up the 17-kill performance against the Horned Frogs with 16 kills against Kansas State the next week. She tallied 16 kills three more times in the season before setting a new career-high with 18 kills and a .531 hitting clip against SMU on March 20. Dugan tallied 16 or more kills in each of her double-digit kill performances.
Sanders, a transfer from Texas A&M, made a massive impact in her first season in the Scarlet and Black, leading the team in kills (305), kills per set (3.59), points (333), total attacks (937) while recording a team-high nine double-doubles. Her 3.59 kills per set ranked fifth in the Big 12 and her 305 total kills ranked 29th nationally and fourth in the conference. Sanders recorded double-digit kills in 17 of 22 matches, including five 20-plus kill performances.
The Waco, Texas native, had a breakout performance against TCU tallying 20-plus kills in consecutive matches against the Horned Frogs with a career-high 24 on Oct. 9. She came within one kill of her career-high with 23 against Oklahoma on Nov. 12, helping lead Tech to its first win over the Sooners since 2015. Sanders finished the season on a high note against SMU, setting a career high of 26 kills on March 19 before breaking her career mark with 28 kills against the Mustangs the next day. She hit a season-best .397 in the five-set win over SMU and finished the weekend with 54 total kills and 25 digs while posting a .355 hitting clip over two matches.
The duo of Dugan and Sanders made up over 40 percent of the Red Raiders offense accounting for 502 total kills and 562.5 points.
