Red Raiders Begin Home Stand Against Hartford

LUBBOCK, Texas – A four-game home stand begins this week for the Texas Tech soccer team with Hartford and Abilene Christian coming to play at the John Walker Soccer Complex. The Red Raiders host the Hawks at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the first-ever meeting between the two programs before taking on ACU at 7 p.m. on Sunday in a pair of non-conference games that will also be streamed on ESPN+.
Texas Tech (1-0-1) is coming off a 1-1 draw at UC San Diego on Sunday in California after opening its season last Thursday with a 1-0 victory over UTEP at home. Hartford (2-0-0) travels down from Connecticut to play the Red Raiders after beginning its season with a 5-0 win over Delaware State and a 1-0 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn last week. ACU (1-1-0) will not play a game before coming to Lubbock and has started its season with a 1-0 win over UTEP and a 2-1 overtime loss to New Mexico State. TTU is 4-0-0 all-time against Abilene Christian, most recently a 3-0 win on Sept. 6, 2019.
Kirsten Davis and Macy Schultz have provided the two goals for the Red Raiders through the first two games with Davis scoring against UTEP off an assist from freshman Macy Blackburn and Schultz recording the equalizer at UCSD with Charlotte Teeter recording the assist. Davis, a super senior from St. Louis, is third all-time in program history with 32 career goals and has 80 points through 77 games played. Schultz has seven goals on her resume with three as a freshman and three last season as a sophomore. A junior from Colorado, Schultz scored two goals in the season finale last year against West Texas A&M for her first multi-goal game.
Madison White has played all 200 minutes in goal this season for the Red Raiders. She has two saves after not facing any shots in the opener against UTEP and then making a pair of stops at UCSD. A junior from Rockwall, has made 94 career saves coming into the third game this season. White and Davis were both named to the 2021 Preseason All-Big 12 Team coming into the season.
Teeter is a senior from Alpharetta, Georgia who now has 23 career points after her assists in California. A two-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, Teeter has five assists and nine career goals as a Red Raiders. Blackburn is a Keller, Texas native who is in her first season at Texas Tech who has had one shots in both games to start the season. Along with Teeter, defensive standouts Cassie Hiatt and Hannah Anderson have played all 200 minutes this season for the Red Raiders. The TTU defensive until held UTEP without a single shot in the opener and only six overall.
TEAM CAPTAINS: Davis and Cassie Hiatt are serving at team captains for the second straight season. A defender from Parker, Colorado, Hiatt has been a dominate player for the Red Raider defense for three seasons beginning with a Big 12 All-Freshman campaign to get started. Hiatt earned All-America honors as a sophomore along with All-Big 12 First Team. Davis, who was selected No. 13 in the NWSL College Draft, decided to return to school to play her fifth season at Texas Tech. She had 16 goals as a junior to earn Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and All-America honors. Davis is currently third all-time at Tech with 32 career goals behind Kristy Frantz (41) and Janine Beckie (57).
THE TEAM: Texas Tech has 33 players on its roster with 20 returners and 13 newcomers. The Red Raiders have 11 freshmen on the roster along with adding transfers in Eva Hurm (Notre Dame) and Sierra Castles (Long Beach State).
OUR LEADER: Tom Stone picked up his 160th win with the season-opening victory over UTEP. A Dallas native who graduated from Duke, Stone is in his 15th season leading the program after roles at Denver, Duke and Clemson. He has led the Red Raiders to seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including to the Sweet 16 in 2014. Tech won the 2015 Big 12 Tournament and has had eight double-digit win seasons under Stone's leadership.
OUR GOLD MEDALIST: Texas Tech welcomed Janine Beckie back to Lubbock on Saturday, August 14 after the former Red Raider helped lead Canada to the gold medal in Tokyo. Beckie, who is the all-time leading goal scorer in Tech history with 57, is currently playing professionally with Manchester City FC. Canada won the gold medal with a shootout win over Sweden in the championship game.
THURSDAY'S OPPONENT: Hartford travels to Lubbock with its 2-0-0 record after earning a 5-0 win over Delaware State last Thursday and then a 1-0 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday. Playing out of the America East Conference, the Hawks had their entire 2020-21 season canceled due to COVID-19. The team went 10-7-2 in 2019, falling 2-1 in its conference tournament final to Stony Brook to have its season end. Through two games, Kelly Severini leads the Hawks with two goals, while Andrea Garcia, Imani Jenkins, May Cervone and Taylor Brown have one goal each. Maia Perez has recorded two shutouts in goal for Harford and has one save. The Hawks, who hail from the state capitol of Connecticut, have advanced to the America East Championship final in four of the past six seasons.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will remain at home next week when they host Cal State Fullerton and UTSA to complete the four-game home stand. TTU will take on Fullerton on Thursday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. before finishing off the home stand against UTSA at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5. The team will then travel to Arizona to play in the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson with games against Arizona and Arizona State.
