SOCCER RECAP: Red Raiders 2, CSU Fullerton 1
September 02, 2021 | Women's Soccer
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech earned a 2-1 win over Cal State Fullerton on Thursday with Sierra Castles and Ashleigh Williams scoring goals and Madison White recording two saves at the Walker Soccer Complex.
The Red Raiders (4-0-1) earned their third straight win and are now 3-0 all-time against the Titons who fell to 0-4-0 on the season. The game experienced a lightning delay that started at 7:50 p.m. and did not resume until 9:02 p.m. when the teams completed the final 12 minutes of the first half.
"I thought for the first 30 minutes we were the dominant team and had some of the best passing and moving off the ball that we've had all year," Texas Tech coach Tom Stone said. "We were in a great groove. Then the rain came and they came out ready to fight. They pressed us, tackled us and scrapped with us. They had a great response. We didn't wilt under the pressure. The best part of dealing with the fight is that we got the win."
Texas Tech led 1-0 at halftime with Castles scoring in the 14th minute off an assist from Kirsten Davis. A transfer from Hawaii who played at Long Beach State, Castles scored her first goal as a Red Raider while Davis now has three assists this season and 19 in her career. Tech did not allow a Titon shot in the first half.
Williams scored the second goal of the game for the Red Raiders, striking in the 57th minute off an assist from fellow freshman Macy Blackburn. The goal gave Tech a 2-0 lead and was the second of the season for Williams who scored the game-winner in the 1-0 win over Hartford last Thursday. Blackburn now leads the team with four assists after having two in the 6-0 win over ACU on Sunday.

Texas Tech finished the game with a 13-6 shots advantage. White (4-0-1) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Red Raiders for the win where she made two second-half saves. Defensively, Hannah Anderson, Cassie Hiatt, Kennedy Chambers, Blackburn and Jordie Harr competed in all 90 minutes to continue the strong defensive effort.
Texas Tech will return to action against UTSA at 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Walker Soccer Complex to complete its four-game home stand.
"This is their best team in a decade," Stone said. "We're going to have to gear up again. We know how good they are. Now is the time to go about the process of getting mentally and physically ready to play again."
