LUBBOCK, Texas – On a three-game winning streak and closing out a four-game home stand, Texas Tech is set to host UTSA at 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Walker Soccer Complex.
The Red Raiders (4-0-1) are coming off a 2-1 non-conference win over Cal State Fullerton on Thursday night, while the Roadrunners (4-1-0) won their fourth straight with a 1-0 victory at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday. Texas Tech is 5-0-0 all-time against UTSA after a 4-0 win on Sept. 4, 2015 in the last meeting between the two programs.
Tickets for the game are $5 for adults and $3 for youth with general admission seating. The game will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
Tech comes into the matchup having outscored its opponents by a 10-1 margin through four home games and 11-2 overall this season following the 2-1 win over Fullerton. The Red Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead with Sierra Castles scoring in the 14th minute and Ashleigh Williams heading in a pass from Macy Blackburn in the 57th. The goal was the first for Castles as a Red Raiders after she transferred in from Long Beach State, while Williams now has two game-winning goals through five games of her freshman season.
Kirsten Davis assisted Castles on the first goal against Fullerton and now has three assists and three goals this season. A fifth-year senior from Colorado, Davis is third all-time in program history with 87 points after having two goals and three assists in the past two games. Blackburn, a freshman from Keller, leads the Red Raiders with four assists after having two assists against Abilene Christian and then added her fourth on Thursday in a freshman connection with Williams. Blackburn also had an assist in the season opening 1-0 win over UTEP with Davis scoring and scored her first collegiate goal in the 6-0 win over ACU. Macy Schultz is tied for the team lead with three goals this season after scoring the equalizer in the 1-1 draw at UC San Diego and then striking for two in the win over ACU. A junior from Colorado, Schultz has nine career goals after scoring three as a freshman and sophomore.
Madison White had two saves in goal against Fullerton and now has nine this season and 98 in her career. A junior from Rockwall, White was named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team along with Davis  and has played all 470 minutes for the Red Raiders this season. White has played behind a stifling Texas Tech defense this season with the Red Raiders owning a owning a 79-22 shots advantage. Hannah Anderson and Cassie Hiatt lead the defense which is allowing only 4.4 shots per game.
The Roadrunners opened their season with a 2-0 loss at Oklahoma State before running off four straight wins over Tulsa, California Baptist, Grand Canyon and Corpus Christi coming into the matchup in Lubbock. UTSA has a 9-3 goals advantage through its five games with six different players scoring, including getting two goals each from Ellis Patterson, Kedall Kloza and Anna Sutter. In goal, Jill Schneider has played every minute and has recorded 19 saves and three shutouts.
TEAM CAPTAINS: Davis and Cassie Hiatt are serving at team captains for the second straight season. A defender from Parker, Colorado, Hiatt has been a dominate player for the Red Raider defense for three seasons beginning with a Big 12 All-Freshman campaign to get started. Hiatt earned All-America honors as a sophomore along with All-Big 12 First Team. Davis, who was selected No. 13 in the NWSL College Draft, decided to return to school to play her fifth season at Texas Tech. She had 16 goals as a junior to earn Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and All-America honors. Davis is currently third all-time at Tech with 34 career goals behind Kristy Frantz (41) and Janine Beckie (57).
THE TEAM: Texas Tech has 33 players on its roster with 20 returners and 13 newcomers. The Red Raiders have 11 freshmen on the roster along with adding transfers in Eva Hurm (Notre Dame) and Sierra Castles (Long Beach State).
OUR LEADER: Tom Stone picked up his 163rd win with the victory over Cal State Fullerton. A Dallas native who won a national championship as a player at Duke, Stone is in his 15th season leading the program after roles at Denver, Duke and Clemson. He has led the Red Raiders to seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including to the Sweet 16 in 2014. Tech won the 2015 Big 12 Tournament and has had eight double-digit win seasons under Stone's leadership.
OUR GOLD MEDALIST: Texas Tech welcomed Janine Beckie back to Lubbock on Saturday, August 14 after the former Red Raider helped lead Canada to the gold medal in Tokyo. Beckie, who is the all-time leading goal scorer in Tech history with 57, is currently playing professionally with Manchester City FC. Canada won the gold medal with a shootout win over Sweden in the championship game.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will travel to Arizona to play in the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson with games against Arizona and Arizona State next weekend. TTU plays Arizona on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 9 p.m. (CST) before playing Arizona State on Sunday, Sept. 12. The Wildcats are currently 1-1 on the season with a 2-1 win over Northern Arizona after a season-opening 2-0 loss to Utah Valley. Arizona will host LSU and Cal State North Ridge this week before hosting its home tournament.
