Five Red Raiders came away with first-place finishes
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech track and field team wrapped up the Red Raider Open hosting one of the most competitive meets in the country Friday evening at the Sports Performance Center.
"What I liked about this meet was we created an environment that was going to be like the Big 12 Championship final and the NCAA first round," said head coach Wes Kittley. "You've got to come into this meet and be prepared like you are at the first round of the NCAA. We had some really good performances, but like in the hurdles, guys ran one round and we're barely not there. They ran well but that's what the whole meet was about, even with some great teams in the field. I think this created an environment that we needed, and we need each week, so these kids get used to that."
In the men's weight throw, Gabe Oladipo came out the clear winner by nearly a meter and half as his final throw went 21.48m (70'-5.75'). Oladipo now owns each top 10 mark in Tech history following tonight. Monae' Nichols took first in the women's long jump with a leap of 6.66m (21'-10.25) on her first attempt.
The men's 600yd race saw newcomer Moad Zahafii take the title in his first action of competition this season. Zahafi recorded a time of 1:08.29 as three Red Raiders finished in the top 5. Marco Vilca (1:09.85) and Sven Cepus (1:10.17) placed third and fourth, respectively.
Caleb Wilborn put on a show in the high jump, setting back-to-back personal records on his final two jumps. His second attempt was cleared at 2.15m (7'-0.50") before clearing the bar at 2.18m (7'-2.50") on his final leap. Kentucky's Rahman Minor placed second while USC's Earnie Sears finished third. Sears placed second at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Three Red Raiders placed in the top 5 of the men's 200m race. Courtney Lindsey finished second overall (20.56) as Jacolby Shelton secured a new PR at 20.70, while Ashton O'Conner finished fifth (20.92).
Seasons Usual came away in second in the weight throw with her second toss landing at 20.78m (68'-2.25") as Kayli Johnson rounded out the top 4 with a toss of 18.76m (61'-6.75").
