Tech earned a pair of sweeps Friday
LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas Tech women's tennis team returned to the McLeod Tennis Center in style Friday rolling to a 5-0 sweep over UTEP and a 4-0 sweep over Abilene Christian.
Sophomore Margarita Skriabina continued her torrid start to the spring season, as the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week dropped just one game in singles play all day. With the two victories the Russian ran her singles record to a perfect 5-0.
Playing as Texas Tech's (2-0) No. 1 player, she rolled 6-0, 6-0 against UTEP (0-1), before earning a tidy one and zero victory against Sylvia Vilojoen of ACU. Skribina has now dropped just one set in the five victories this spring and is now 26-4 in her last 30 matches.
Olivia Peet and Metka Komac rolled in the first double match against the Miners, earning a perfect 6-0 victory, before Lubbock native Camryn Stepp and Kailey Evans sealed the doubles point with a 6-1 victory.
Evans and Stepp again joined forces in the afternoon to down Andrea Guerrero and Eva Arranz 6-0. Komac and Peet sealed the doubles point for the Lady Raiders with a 6-3 victory in the second doubles match of the afternoon.
HEAD COACH TODD PETTY:
"I thought our performance today was good. We're playing with a lot of new faces in different positions than they were in last year. There are always going to be first match nerves and that showed against UTEP, but I thought we played much better against ACU in the second match. We were able to finish off the matches and looked comfortable doing so. We gained some experience today which is the whole goal with these early season matches. It's about gaining experience, learning lessons and getting the nerves out. That's what it was about today. I also thought we played good doubles today, which has been a point of emphasis for us the last couple of years. I thought we did a good job of getting the early point."
On Skriabina's strong start:
"In women's tennis to have a number one player that can go out and do what Margarita has done the last two weeks is huge. It's a quick point on the board the way she can take care of business. Her performance today just shows why she's a leader for our team, and one of the best No. 1 players we have had in quite a while. It's nice to see her get out there and play the way she is."
UP NEXT:
Texas Tech will travel east to College Station for the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Lady Raiders will play a pair of SEC foes in RV South Carolina and No. 13 Texas A&M.
