Tech sits tied for third at Illini Invitational

The Red Raiders fired identical rounds of 278 (-10) to sit at -20 after 36 holes
MEDINAH, Ill. -- Powered by strong performances from freshman Shannon Tan, Chiara Horder and Anna Dong, the Texas Tech women's golf program finished off a 36-hole score of -20 overall to sit tied for third at the Illini Invitational hosted by the University of Illinois after day one. Â

The Red Raiders were led by Tan, who fired a career-best round of 67 in the opening round and round of 69 in the second round to sit at -8 overall. The true freshman is tied for seventh, just three shots behind Sarah Edwards of Alabama (-11).

Tech's other player inside the top-10 was Horder, who recorded just one bogey in the 36 holes of action Monday. The sophomore fired consecutive rounds of 69 and 68 to sit in a tie for ninth at -7 overall.

Senior Anna Dong and freshman Lauren Zaretsky also fired back-to-back strong rounds. Dong fired rounds of 69 and 70 to finish the opening two rounds at -5 overall.

Playing as an individual, Zaretsky followed an opening round 72 with a career-best round of 67 to also sit at -5 for the tournament.

San Jose State enjoys the 36-hole lead at -26 overall, one shot clear of SEC foe Kentucky (-25). Tech and Alabama are tied for third at -20, followed by Auburn (-19) and defending champion Georgia (-15).

Northwestern fell from solo third to seventh and is -14 overall, followed by Illinois (-13). Tennessee (-10) and Purdue (-10) currently are sharing ninth, followed by Oklahoma State (-7) and Oregon State (-5).

TCU (-2), Oklahoma (Even) and ETSU (+29) round out the 15-team field.

The Red Raiders return to action tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. for the third and final round of the Illini Invitational. Tech will be teeing off from holes 1-3 for the shotgun start and will be paired with San Jose State and Kentucky.
