LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech will enter the 2022-23 season at No. 25 in the Associated Press Top-25 which announced its preseason rankings on Monday morning. The Red Raiders are coming off a trip to the Sweet 16 in the 2022 NCAA Tournament and finished the season at No. 12 in the AP Top 25.
North Carolina is the top-ranked team in the AP Top 25 Preseason Poll followed by Gonzaga, Houston, Kentucky, Baylor and Kansas. The Red Raiders are set to play No. 9 in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, while the Big 12 is also represented by No. 12 Texas and No. 14 TCU.
Tech went 27-10 last season, including going 18-0 at home which was only matched by Kentucky. Head coach Mark Adams returns for his second season leading the program where he helped guide the team to the No. 1 defensive efficiency rating to go along with a trip to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Red Raiders return only three players from last season, including Kevin Obanor who started all 37 games and was an All-Big 12 honorable mention selection. Obanor recorded double-doubles in each of the team's three NCAA Tournament games and is joined by Daniel Batcho and KJ Allen who also return.
The program brought in five players from the transfer portal in D'Maurian Williams (Gardner-Webb), Fardaws Aimaq (Utah Valley), Jaylon Tyson (Texas), De'Vion Harmon (Oregon/Oklahoma) and Kerwin Walton. Aimaq was the 2021 WAC Player of the Year and earned WAC Defensive Player of the Year the past two seasons. Has 41 career double-doubles. The program also has five true freshmen this season.
Obanor and Aimaq were named All-Big 12 Preseason honorable mention last week while the Red Raiders were picked fifth in the conference poll.
Tech was unranked for the first five polls last season before being ranked for the rest of the season. The Red Raiders were ranked as high as No. 9. The Red Raiders have advanced to four straight NCAA Tournaments for the first time in program history, starting with advancing to the 2018 Elite 8 and then the 2019 NCAA Championship final. The Red Raiders beat Montana State and Notre Dame last season in San Diego to advance to the Sweet 16 where they fell to Duke in San Francisco.Â
TTU opens the season by hosting Northwestern State at 8 p.m. on Monday, November 7 at the United Supermarkets Arena.
