BEYOND ENEMY LINES (TEXAS A&M CC):
• The Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders went 19-10 in 2021-22, and 11-3 in Southland Conference Play. The 11-3 mark was good for second place in the final standings, one game behind Houston Baptist University.
• Led by First Team All-Southland Conference
selections Makinna Serrata and Alecia Westbrook, the Islanders were projected to win the Southland this season. A&M Corpus Christi received 148 total points and 11 of 20 first place votes.
• A 2021-22 SLC All-Conference First Team selection and SLC Student-Athlete of the Year, Serrata averaged 14.5 points per game and shot an impressive 50.2 percent from the floor.
• The SLC Defensive Player of the Year and Dave Campbell Defensive Player of the Year, Westbrook scored 13.3 points and grabbed 10.4 rebounds.
COACH SPEAK (HC KRISTA GERLICH):
"Texas A&M Corpus Christi is very well rounded, deep and experienced. They have a couple of players that are dangerous. They have a point guard that is really heady and we're going to have to do a good job of controlling her. They have a wing player that was their leading scorer last year, and she's really dangerous. She's versatile and will be a bit of a matchup problem for us. And then they have a post player that averaged a double-double last year and she can really rebound the ball. So that's a concern of mine because a team they really rebound the ball well. We're going to have to put a body on them and do a good job of rebounding. This game should be a really good challenge for us."
ON FINISHING INSIDE THE TOP-20 IN ATTENDANCE, FANS SUPPORT:
"I'm super proud of the fact that Red Raider Nation always shows up and shows out in support of all of our teams. We need that support from our fanbase this season. The passion our fanbase shows is something that we sell in recruiting. They come out and support women's basketball and all of our teams here. We need the homecourt advantage that they provide. We've done a good job of getting out into the community and trying to introduce our kids to the community, and then I've been speaking all over the place trying to sell season tickets. And get people to come out and give us a chance. Our girls work and play really hard. I've seen what a fanbase can do and can mean to a team. So, I really hope they will come out. Monday night is a great opportunity for our fans to see both us and the men on the same night. It's a great chance to make a statement and show the country that Red Raider Nation is here to stay."
UP NEXT:
