February 11, 2022 | Softball
The Red Raiders scored in every inning of their run rule win over UTSA.
HOUSTON – The Texas Tech softball team tied a program record with five home runs en route to an 8-0 run rule win over UTSA to open the 2022 season. Kendall Fritz tossed a one-hit shutout in her Red Raider debut allowing just two base runners in the contest.
Seven different Red Raiders recorded a hit with Arriana Villa and Carson Armijo leading the way with a pair of hits including one home run each. Abbie Orrick recorded a career-high three RBI to lead all players.
The Red Raiders got on the board first after a throwing error put Molly Grumbo on second. Grumbo stole third to set up an RBI ground out from Ellie Bailey for the first run of the day.
Tech extended its lead to 4-0 in the second when Orrick smashed her first career home run over the center field wall to bring in Alanna Barraza and Villa who each reached on singles to left field.
Payton Jackson added on to the Red Raider lead with a solo shot in the bottom of the third, her first career home run.
In the circle, Fritz was perfect through three innings until a walk and a swinging bunt ended her no-hit bid in the top of the fourth.
A solo home run from Villa led off the fourth inning for the Red Raiders to make it 6-0.
The Red Raiders started the fifth the same way they started the fourth with a leadoff home run from Ellie Bailey. Armijo ended the game in run-rule fashion with the first home run of her career and the fifth of the game for Tech.
