PREVIEW
First pitch is set for Friday at 3:00 p.m. against the UTSA Roadrunners. The Red Raiders will play UTSA again on Saturday before facing the host school Houston Saturday night and again Sunday afternoon.
The Red Raiders are 16-10 in season openers dating back to 1996 when the program was reintroduced as an intercollegiate sport and have won four straight season openers.
Tech and UTSA have met on 27 occasions with the Red Raiders getting the best of the Roadrunners in 16 of those meetings. The last meeting between the two sides came in 2018 when Tech came out on top 5-0 in Lubbock.
The Red Raiders and Cougars have surprisingly met just six times in program history. Houston holds a 4-2 series advantage, winning the three most recent meetings. Tech last faced its future Big 12 foe in 2020 when the Red Raiders fell to the Cougars 2-1 in Houston.
Last season the Red Raiders finished 21-26 and 3-15 in Big 12 play but took home third in the Big 12 Championships as the No. 6 seed after upsetting Baylor and the No. 3 seed and 10th ranked team in the nation, Texas. Tech returns 11 players from a season ago while adding 13 newcomers with six transfers and seven freshmen. All-Big 12 Freshmen Team earners Riley Love and Arriana Villa look to build off their impressive rookie campaigns for the Red Raiders.
UTSA went 15-31 in 2021 including an 8-12 record in Conference USA, finishing fourth in the CUSA West division standings. The Roadrunners have been projected to finish 10th in the CUSA standings in 2022.
Houston ended the 2021 season with an overall record of 16-33 and 7-17 record in the American Athletic Conference for a fifth-place finish, the first finish outside of the top three since 2014. The Cougars were picked to finish fourth in the American standings in 2022, behind three NCAA tournament teams from a season ago: Wichita State, South Florida and UCF.
