February 18, 2022 | Baseball
ARLINGTON, Texas – Welcome to college, Owen Washburn. The Texas Tech freshman hit a two-out walk-off single (watch) to push the No. 14 Red Raiders past Michigan, 7-6, on Friday's opening night of the State Farm College Showdown at Globe Life Field. He finished 3-of-4, along with two walks, three runs scored and the game-winning RBI.
Michigan jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a home run from its lead-off hitter Clark Elliott, and never trailed until Texas Tech celebrated its victory. The Wolverines led by as many as four, owning a 4-0 advantage before Tech scored its first run of the season in the bottom of the third.
Kurt Wilson struck out looking during the first inning with Washburn on-base but would not be denied the second time around as he delivered the RBI single to plate the run (watch).
Texas Tech continued to scrape its way closer as the sixth inning saw the gap shrink to a 6-5 lead for Michigan. After three drawing three walks, Jace Jung headed to the plate and Michigan countered with its closer, Willie Weiss. Jung was hit-by-pitch, and a wild pitch scored another.
The Red Raiders found stability on the mound in the late innings with Brendan Girton's 2.1 innings of work (watch). It was seven-up, seven-down for the second-year sophomore as he entered for the last out in the sixth before giving way to Chase Hampton to start the ninth. Hampton would earn the win as the pitcher of record.
Weiss finished the game for the Wolverines, allowing the Tech rally in the bottom of the ninth. The first three batters found the base pads in the ninth, starting with a lead-off hit from Easton Murrell followed by Cole Stilwell taking a hit-by-pitch and Hudson White earning a base on balls. Dalton Porter, pinch-hitting, provided the sacrifice fly to tie the game before Washburn closed his phenomenal night.
