LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Mark Adams and senior Bryson Williams have been honored with 2021-22 Men's All-District Team awards by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.
Adams earned District VII Coach of the Year and Williams is one of 10 players named to the All-District VII Team. The awards were announced on Wednesday and honored 10 players and a coach of the year from nine geographic districts. District VII includes Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana in the USBWA selections. Â
Adams is in his first season leading the Red Raiders after being hired on April 6 to take over as the program's head coach following five seasons in the associate head coach role. He has also earned Associated Press Big 12 Coach of the Year honors for helping to lead the Red Raiders to their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and a 25-9 overall record. Tech finished third in the Big 12 standings with a 12-6 record in conference after Adams helped reconstruct a coaching staff and roster over the offseason. Adams is also on the Werner Ladder Naismith Coach of the Year Late Season Watch List.
Williams has collected a slew of postseason awards, including being named to the All-Big 12 First Team, Big 12 All-Newcomer Team, Big 12 All-Tournament Team, Associated Press All-Big 12 First Team and to the NABC All-District First Team. Williams leads Tech with 13.7 points per game this season (16.1 in Big 12 play) in his first and final season with the program. A fifth-year senior who transferred in last summer, Williams began his career with two seasons at Fresno State and then two more at UTEP before arriving in Lubbock. A starter in all 34 games this season, Williams has now scored 2,094 points in his career with 467 coming this year in a Red Raider uniform. He scored a season-high 33 points in a double-overtime classic against Kansas in Lawrence in the regular season and is coming off scoring a team-high 17 points against KU last Saturday in the Big 12 Championship Final in Kansas City. He's scored in double figures in 25 of 34 games this season and in 104 in his career.
Adams and the Red Raiders are set to open the NCAA Tournament against Montana State at 12:45 p.m. (CT) on Friday in San Diego, California. It will be the first NCAA Tournament game for Williams in his career and the first NCAA Division I Tournament game as a head coach for Adams.
The District VII Player of the Year went to JD Notae of Arkansas while the team consisted of Timmy Allen (Texas), James Akinjo (Baylor), Kendric Davis (SMU), Tari Eason (LSU), Adam Flagler (Baylor), Ty Gordon (Nicholls), Mike Miles (TCU), Notae, Williams and Jaylin Williams (Arkansas).
