April 01, 2022 | Softball
The Red Raiders picked up their first conference win of the season, defeating Kansas 12-9.
Tech tallied a season-high 13 hits to Kansas' 11 hits in the contest. Abbie Orrick went 4-for-4 at the plate while Molly Grumbo went 2-for-3 and Peyton Blythe went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
The Red Raiders struck first as Ellie Bailey roped a two-out RBI double to right field to score Payton Jackson from second to make it 1-0.
Kansas loaded the bases the next inning to threaten, but Kendall Fritz worked back from a 2-0 count to get the batter swinging to end the inning.
Tech exploded for four runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. Orrick led off with a double and moved to third on a sac bunt from Grumbo who reached on an error. Orrick scored on an errant throw from the catcher, who tried to catch Grumbo stealing second, sent the ball into the outfield. Blythe and Arriana Villa tallied back-to-back RBI singles to make it 4-0 and Blythe used aggressive base running to score on a ground out to third for the fifth run of the inning.
The Jayhawks responded on a big way, hitting three home runs in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to one, 5-4. Lyric Moore hit a solo shot to left field to start the scoring, while back-to-back home runs from Olivia Bruno and Haleigh Harper chased Fritz out of the game. Erna Carlin entered in relief and struck out the first batter she faced to end the inning.
The Red Raiders pushed the lead back to three, 7-4, with a two-out, two-RBI single from Blythe, her second hit of the game and third RBI.
Tech made it 10-4 in the fourth inning with a couple of two-out hits. Orrick doubled over the third base bag to bring in Carson Armijo and Riley Ehlen scored on a fielding error from the left fielder on the play. Grumbo then singled to score Orrick before a strikeout ended the inning.
The Jayhawks would not go down quietly as they answered with three runs in the top of the fifth to make it 10-7. After two quick outs a hit-by-pitch, single and a walk loaded the bases for Shayna Espy who knocked a bases-clearing double to center field to cut the lead to three.
Kansas kept chipping away at the lead, pulling within a run on a two-run home run from Savanna DesRochers in the top of the sixth.
Tech added some insurance in the home half of the inning to make it 12-9 heading into the seventh. Ehlen led off the inning with a single and Orrick followed up with a double to center field to put runners on second and third with no outs. With two outs and the bases loaded, Villa hit a ball to the second baseman who went for the out at second but Love slid in safely, allowing one run to score as everyone was safe on the play. A wild pitch scored one more to push the lead back to three.
Morgan Hornback closed the door for the Red Raiders in the seventh, picking up the save in the final 1.2 innings with just one base runner and no hits allowed.
Carlin (5-2) got the win in the circle, pitching 2.2 innings giving up five runs on six hits while striking out two and walking two. Fritz started the game, going two and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on five hits, three of which were home runs.
