Despite a pair of ranked wins from Olivia Peet and Avelina Sayfetdinova, Tech fell Sunday
LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite a pair of straight-set ranked-victories from Olivia Peet and Avelina Sayfetdinova, the Texas Tech women's tennis program fell to No. 3 Oklahoma 5-2 on senior day Sunday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (13-9, 3-5 Big 12) shook off a slow start during doubles play to get off to a blistering start in singles action, as Sayfetdinova, Peet and Komac all won their opening sets.
After winning five of the final six games of the first set on court three to flip an early 3-1 deficit into a 6-4 set victory, Sayfetdinova rolled to a 6-2 second-set victory over No. 56 Ivana Corley to even the score at one-all.
Peet quickly answered with an easy 6-1 victory on court two to give the Lady Raiders an early 2-1 lead.
After OU (20-1, 6-0 Big 12) answered with a two and three victory to even the score on court six, Kailey Evans and Margarita Skriabina each responded with clutch second-set victories to send their matches to a third set.
With Metka Komac up a set after a 7-2 tiebreaker victory and up two breaks on court four, the path to four points seemed plausible for the Lady Raiders, but OU used a furious comeback to win the second set on court four, 7-5.
In the end, OU took all three matches that went the distance, including a 6-3 victory by No. 19 Layne Sleeth over No. 24 Margarita Skriabina and a 6-2 victory by No. 113 Alexandra Pisareva on court five.
The two victories on one and five gave OU a 4-2 lead.
Komac continued to battle on court four, but ultimately fell 6-4 in the third set.
Prior to the match, Tech honored Skriabina and student assistant coach Kaitlyn Staines for their contributions to the program.
HEAD COACH TODD PETTY:
"Today was another great match, and we were extremely competitive with the number three team in country. We made them win some tough third sets to beat us. They were just better than us today and we need to get tougher in third sets. But I'm proud of this group for putting themselves in a position to win against this caliber of opponent. It shows the improvement we're making. I think our team has to feel confident after the way we've played this weekend and the way we're battling some of the best teams in the country. We need to keep our head up high and know that we're right there. The season is far from over and we've got plenty left."
