No. 4 Tech on wrong end of wild ending in Ft. Worth
April 15, 2022 | Baseball
FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 4 Texas Tech rallied late, but came up short against TCU, falling 4-3 on Friday night at Lupton Stadium. The Red Raiders trailed 4-0 before scoring two in the eighth and one in the ninth.
Trailing 4-2, the Red Raiders loaded the bases in the ninth with one out. Ty Coleman worked an RBI walk to bring the game within one, 4-3. Kurt Wilson marked the second out as he hit into an infield fly.
Down to the last out, Trevor Conley pinch hit for Dillon Carter. Sitting with a 2-2 count, Tech momentarily tied the game on a balk as Sam Hunt crossed the plate, but soon thereafter a discussion, he was sent back to third base and Conley grounded out to the second baseman on the next pitch to end the game.
TCU scored a pair in the second and a pair in the sixth to jump ahead 4-0 in a contest Tech's offense could not do much until it came alive in the eighth and ninth. Both in the second and sixth, TCU's leadoff batter singled and ended up scoring.
Tech put a runner in scoring position for the first time in the third, albeit without recording a hit. Parker Kelly drew a walk and advanced to second on a ground out. In the fifth, Kelly ended the Frogs' no-hitter after 4 and 1/3 innings and advanced to second again before the inning ended.
Hudson White, moving on a hit-and-run, became the first Red Raider to reach third base in the game in the seventh as Kelly connected for his second hit of the game, and the team's second hit.
It would be the eighth when Tech finally broke through. The first four Red Raiders reached base to lead off the inning, starting with Cole Stilwell being hit by a pitch. Jace Jung drew a walk and Coleman slapped a single to left field to load the bases. Wilson hit a two-RBI single into left-center and the deficit was cut in half, narrowing TCU's lead to 4-2, which set up the dramatic finish in the ninth.
Brandon Birdsell picked up his second loss of the season. All four of TCU's runs were charged to Birdsell, matching his season-high set against Texas (March 26), his three strikeouts were a season-low after having no less than seven over his previous seven starts. Birdsell exited in the sixth after TCU scored once using its first three batters, jumping on him for two singles and a walk.
Mason Molina inherited runners on the corners and no outs and struck out the side, but one of the strikeouts was wild, allowing the runner from third to score for the second run in the sixth. Molina faced one batter above the minimum in his three innings of work. He allowed one hit and struck out four.
The loss to TCU on Friday marks Texas Tech's first Big 12 series loss this season. The Red Raiders drop to 7-4 in conference action and to 27-11 overall. The three-game losing streak Tech is currently under, dates back to Tuesday's loss to Oklahoma in Amarillo, which matches its season-high.
