Last Week
It was a huge weekend for Tech on both coasts of the country as half of the team went to California for the Mt. Sac Relays, while the other half visited Florida for the Tom Jones Memorial. Over in Florida, the Red Raiders took down four school records, highlighted by Moad Zahafi clocking in a 1:43.69 in the 800 for the world lead. For his stellar weekend, the Morocco native was named to The Bowerman Mid-Outdoor Watchlist Thursday afternoon.
Meanwhile, over in California, Monae' Nichols broke her own school record in the long jump with a mark of 6.86m (22-6.25) – that mark is second in the world. She also went on to set a record in the wind-aided long jump portion with a leap of 6.89m (22-7.25).
Both Zahafi and Nichols were named Big 12 Athletes of the Week Wednesday afternoon.
On The Lookout
A few Red Raiders are penciled in to make their season debuts. Noah Burton will look to go in the 400 hurdles, while Markim Felix goes in the discus. Seasons Usual has her sights set on regaining the top NCAA spot in the discus as Ruth Usoro will compete in the long jump for this first time this outdoor season for Tech – she debuted last weekend at Mt. Sac in the triple jump.
At the Tom Jones Memorial last weekend, Terrence Jones, Jr., competed in his first-ever 100 race and finished second with a time of 10.09 – it's the fifth-best wind legal time in the NCAA. Chloe Wall placed second (4.31m) at Florida as her season-best height of 4.35m is 11th nationally – recorded at the Texas Relays. Over in the shot put, Kayli Johnson sits fourth nationally at 17.62m (57.9.75).
