No. 9 Tech routs Baylor, 11-1
April 30, 2022 | Baseball
WACO, Texas – No. 9 Texas Tech cruised to an 11-1 victory against Baylor on Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark. The win clinched the series, and Tech's fifth Big 12 series win in six tries this season.
Tech has outscored Baylor 18-2 in the series. Like Friday night's 7-1 win, the Red Raiders used the early innings to take control of the game. Tech led Baylor 5-1 after three innings on Friday, and again 5-1 after the first three innings on Saturday, and never looked back.
Another similarity in games one and two was dominant starting pitching. Brandon Birdsell followed Andrew Morris' one earned run, seven-inning Friday night masterpiece, with his own one earned run, seven-inning gem.
The Texas Tech bats exploded in the second for five runs using five hits as they batted around the order. The first three batters to step to the plate in the second connected for base hits. Ty Coleman led off with a single that missed by no more than two feet from being a home run as it bounced off the left-field wall. Kurt Wilson followed with a single, and Parker Kelly doubled down the left-field line to plate the first run of the game (watch).
Dillon Carter manufactured a 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly (watch), and what followed was more clutch two-out hitting. Cole Stilwell doubled (watch) to bring home two more runs while Jace Jung hit an RBI single (watch) to increase Tech's lead to five, 5-0. The next half-inning, Baylor registered a solo home run, its' only run.
While the fireworks came early, the middle innings did not produce much of a show. It was three-up, three-down for Texas Tech's offense in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and it appeared the Red Raiders were clinging to their 5-1 lead until the seventh. In the seventh, clutch two-out hitting emerged again and the game was put out of reach.
Jung hit a two-out single and Coleman drew a walk to trigger Baylor to make a call to its bullpen, closing its starter's day, Kobe Andrade, after 6.2 innings on the mound before Wilson's at-bat. Using the very first pitch of the relief effort, Wilson smacked a three-run no-doubter (watch) over the left-field fence to give Tech an 8-1 lead. In the ninth, Tech added three more runs for insurance.
Kyle Robinson, Derek Bridges and Shay Hartis combined for two innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen to close the game.
Wilson finished with his second three-hit game (3-for-5) in a row to lead the Red Raiders. He is 6-for-8 in the series. Jung, Coleman and Kelly also tallied multi-hit performances as each produced a pair of hits.
