Tech stunned by GCU
April 06, 2022 | Baseball
Tech (24-8) entered the top of the ninth trailing 8-2 and fought valiantly, manufacturing five runs from three hits and two errors. Parker Kelly represented the tying run at the plate, but down to two outs and no one aboard after the first seven batters helped score five runs. He powered a ball off the left-field fence, no more than five feet from clearing it, to potentially tie the game, but it bounced off the wall and he was thrown out at second base to end the game.
Until the ninth, nothing was working for the Red Raiders. Tech scored one run in the first, and one run in the third, and was held scoreless over the next five innings of the game. GCU pitching accounted for 15 strikeouts on the afternoon, and eight of those came during that fourth to eighth inning stretch.
Grand Canyon chipped away at a battery of pitchers, as the Red Raiders went to the bullpen for four different arms after Andrew Devine exited his start following three innings. Colin Clark went the next two innings followed by an inning each from Austin Becker, Mason Molina and Kyle Robinson. No Red Raider threw more than 40 pitches.
Ty Coleman squeaked an RBI single up the middle (watch) in the first as Easton Murrell crossed home plate in the first inning for the second day in a row to give Tech the game's first lead. Unlike Tuesday, the Lopes were held scoreless going down in order in the first but couldn't be contained the next frame as GCU tied it 1-1 after two.
Jace Jung helped give Tech a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, earning a leadoff walk. He was driven home via a sacrifice fly (watch) by Kurt Wilson. From that point forward, Grand Canyon took control. The Lopes answered the Red Raiders' one-run quickly in the home half of the third leading off with a double, followed by a triple, to help retake the lead, 3-2.
Grand Canyon rallied for two runs with two outs in the fourth to push its lead to 5-2. They scored two more in the seventh and another in the eighth to hold a sizable six-run lead heading into the ninth.
Coleman led Texas Tech with three hits and tallied the only multi-base hit of the day (watch) which came in the ninth that helped spark the Red Raiders' comeback using a two-run double. Kelly had two hits while four others registered singles to make up Tech's nine hits.
The last time Tech lost three games in a row was last season in its last two games of its series at Kansas State (April 2-3), followed by the series opener to TCU (April 9).
