
Red Raiders close out day one of Joe Meaker Classic

Whatley sits in second place heading into tomorrow’s final decathlon events
CANYON, Texas. – The Texas Tech track and field team concluded day one of the Jo Meaker Classic hosted by West Texas A&M Friday evening.
Cole Whatley kicked off the meet for Tech competing in his first-ever decathlon. He started running in his first 100 race (11.36) and then leaped 6.94m (3.0w) in the long jump to place first. He then went on to place second in the shot put (12.50m, personal best) and high jump (1.95m). He concluded the day running the 400 in 51.57 seconds, to sit in second place with 3,720 points heading into tomorrow.
The women's pole vault saw Tech finish 1-2-3 led by Ryleigh Redding with a height of 3.90m. Sarah Tackitt (3.75m) placed second, while Allyn Tyer (3.75m) finished third. Over in the women's discus, Seasons Usual placed first for the fourth time this outdoor season with a mark of 55.35m.
Over on the men's side, Gabe Oladipo placed second with a mark of 56.35m. Jacob Mechler (51.99m) and Konner Wood (49.35) finished fourth and sixth, respectively.
In the 5000, Jazmyn Martinez placed fifth (18:56.90). Meanwhile, Denim Rogers finished fourth in the men's pole vault (4.55m).
The action continues tomorrow on the final day led by the field events starting at 11 a.m.
