LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech men's tennis have added a pair of newcomers ahead of the 2022-23 season in ACU transfer Tyler Stewart and incoming freshman Lorenzo Esquici.
A native of Midland, Stewart was ranked a four-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net. The son of former Texas Tech women's tennis player Carmen [Clark] Stewart, the Texan was 10-7 against five-star players in his junior career before ending up in Abilene. Stewart played in just three matches in 2021-22 and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Tech's second addition, Esquici, heads to Lubbock after a highly decorated junior career that saw the Brazilian rise to as high as 139 in the world. He went 20-12 in singles play and 18-11 overall in doubles play. 13 of his 20 singles victories came on hard court surfaces, while 11 of his 18 doubles triumphs occurred on the hard courts.
Ranked inside the top-five among U18 players in Brazil, Esquici won the doubles portion of the 2021 J4 Santa Tecla and advanced to the finals of the 2021 J3 Santo Domingo field. The native of Rio de Janeiro also captured the singles portion of the 2021 J4 Santa Tecla.
In addition to his singles and doubles victory in El Salvador, the Brazilian also advanced to the singles final of the J4 Mugla in Turkey in 2020 and the doubles final of the 2019 J4 Itajai in his home country of Brazil.
HC DANNY WHITEHEAD ON STEWART:
"Tyler is a local West Texas product that I believe has a really high celling to his game. I cannot wait to get him to Lubbock and for him to get pushed by our guys. Tyler is going to represent the Red and Black extremely well."
WHITEHEAD ON ESQUICI:
"Lorenzo brings the ability to help us in both singles and doubles right away. I believe he is very talented, and will be motivated to push himself in his time at Texas Tech. We're very excited to get the chance to work with him."
