September 17, 2022 | Women's Volleyball
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raider volleyball team split the day after dropping their first match to Oral Roberts, 1-3, then sweeping Arizona State, 3-0, on Friday at the United Supermarkets Arena.
In the first game, Tech was able to hold the Golden Eagles to just a .136 hitting clip but was unable to capitalize on that. Junior setter Reese Rhodes had herself a game after picking up her fourth double-double with 43 assists and a career-high 16 digs. In the same match, libero Maddie Correa posted 14 digs and freshman Currie Marusak totaled a career-high of 11 digs.
Only Maddie O'Brien put up double-digit kills against ORU with 11, while also posting two aces, four digs and a block. Madison Gilliland led the team in blocks with a career-high of five, followed by Rhodes with three and Brooke Kanas with three.
The second match was much more favorable as the Red Raiders swept Pac-12 foe, Arizona State. The team totaled 44 kills, 42 assists, seven aces and 51 digs in the match. Kenna Sauer led the Red Raiders with 13 kills on the night and also picked up eight digs and a block. Opening statement…
"Overall, for the day, this afternoon I have no excuse. I gave the team a difficult line up. We were trying to rest some players. I got a little too aggressive on what I tried to do and it backfired on us. We just got started too late. It was good to see us recover against a really nice team, and that's a big win for us. We looked so much like ourselves this evening, and I loved how we fought and worked through it. Overall, I think we're back, we're just going to continue to get better from here. I think the win from last night and tonight make up for what happened this afternoon."
On the adjustments from the afternoon game to the night game…
"It started on our side of the net. I felt like, against Oral Roberts, we were fighting against ourselves… There was this cloud over us, and we couldn't snap out of it. We couldn't get ourselves where we wanted with energy and talk, they got confident, and we were just playing uphill the whole way. So, we just needed a hard reset. As soon as we got through the warmup and the last words before the [Arizona State] match started, I could see it in their eyes they were ready to play. They were past whatever went on this afternoon, and we were good to go."
Junior Outside Hitter, #18 Maddie O'Brien
On her performance tonight…
"Honestly, I can't do it without my teammates, you know? It's something we've all been working on. It's just trying to spread the ball out, trying to give other players the ball in order to create opportunities for our PINS and for our middles. Obviously, we can't do it without our defense. Our defense really put an impact in that tonight and they were all over the place. Of course, Reese Rhodes did an amazing job feeding the ball as well. I mean, I couldn't have done it without them."
On tomorrow's game…
"I think our confidence is really high. I think we found ourselves, so I think we're feeling good. I think we're ready to go play another one."
