Three doubles teams stay alive in tournament

LUBBOCK, Texas – Behind a perfect two days of doubles, three Red Raider pairs are moving on to the quarterfinals of the West Texas Pro Tennis Open after their wins on Tuesday and Wednesday. In addition, three more Red Raiders are set to compete in the second round of the singles main draw.
In singles, an all-Red Raiders matchup ensued earlier today when Olle Wallin and Tyler Stewart, who both earned a spot in the main draw after winning two matches in qualifying, faced each other in the first round. Wallin was able to pull out the victory with a straight-set win, 6-2, 6-4, to advance in the tournament.
Yesterday, both Stewart and Franco Ribero were paired in doubles and got things rolling for Texas Tech after defeating the duo of Mikel Anderson and Jakub Ostajewski in two sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Continuing the hot streak in doubles were the Red Raider duo of Isaac Arevalo and Dimitrios Azoidis. Both Red Raiders each won their singles matches yesterday, then were able to defeat the pairing of Chad Kissell and Jibril Nettles in a doubles battle. The Tech pair fell in a first-set breaker, 7-6 (4), but claimed the second set by a score of 6-4. Then, they were able to win the super tiebreak, 10-5, to stay alive in the tournament.
Wallin and Piotr Pawlak posted a big win on the day after taking on the three-seeded pairing of Abraham Asaba and Emil Reinberg in the first round. The duo went out to a fast start, winning their first set 6-4. The Asaba/Reinberg duo were able to come back and even the match with a 7-6 (3) tiebreaker in the second set. The Red Raiders came out on top after only allowing three points in the super tiebreak for a 10-3 score.
Tomorrow in singles, Azoidis will face eight-seeded Gabriel Evans in the second round, then Arevalo and Wallin are set for another all-Red Raider match. In doubles, Ribero and Stewart compete against former TCU Horned Frog Juan Carlos Aguilar and SMU's Pranav Kumar, while the Pawlak/Wallin duo are set to play the Arevalo/Azoidis pairing.
