LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech opens the 2023 track & field season hosting the sixth annual Corky Classic Friday-Saturday inside the Sports Performance Center.
The women's weight throw kicks off the meet at 2:30 p.m. with the men's 3000m race closing the meet around 9:30. Saturday will begin with the women's shot put at 11:00 a.m. while the projected finish is set for 5:40 p.m., the men's 4x400 relay.
After stepping down as the head track coach in 1995, Oglesby remained active in the sport as he attended top events throughout the world each year as either a spectator or as a meet official. He later transitioned to a special projects coordinator in the Red Raider Club, a position he remained active in up until his passing in November of 2017. The inaugural Corky Classic would start the following season.
On the women's sprints side, expect to get an early look at the reigning Big 12 60m indoor champion Rosemary Chukwuma. In her first season with Tech in 2022, the Nigerian etched the current top five times, including the school record of 7.17 in the conference final. Meanwhile, Demisha Roswell, holds the school record of 8.00 in the 60m hurdles and holds two more top 10 school marks.
Courtney Lindsey and Jacolby Shelton are both entered in the 60m and 200m this weekend. Shelton is coming off an indoor season in which he swept the Big 12 60m and 200m titles. One newcomer to watch will be Shaemar Uter who will be going making his collegiate debut, running the 400m. The Jamaican placed sixth at the U20 Championships last year and claimed a silver medal as part of the 4x400 team.
Onaara Obamuwagun and Chris Welch will headline the opening weekend for the loaded jumps crew. Obamuwagun finished fifth at the indoor conference meet and went on to place 11th at nationals in the triple jump. Welch's indoor season was highlighted by a third-place outing at conference as he went on to cap off 2022 finishing sixth outdoors in the triple jump.
The pole vault crew added a huge addition in Zach Bradford from Kansas. During his time there, he became a three-time Big 12 Champion and five-time First Team All-American. He holds an indoor personal best of 5.81m (19'-0.75").
Despite graduating the best weight thrower in school history, Gabe Oladipo, the squad remains strong with returners Jacob Mechler and Konner Wood. They've also added a pair of transfers in Chris Samaniego and Devin Roberson – Big 12 discus champion with TCU a season ago.
Malin Smith and Field Gatlin come back for the women's team. Smith placed fifth in the shot put at the Big 12 meet but concluded the year with a stellar outdoor season. Her discus run to end the season included going fifth at the Big 12 Championship followed by an eighth-place outing at the NCAA Regionals and a third-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
