Tech takes third in Big 12 Preseason Poll
January 26, 2023 | Baseball
IRVING, Texas – Texas Tech was voted third in the 2023 Big 12 Baseball Preseason Poll, the conference revealed on Thursday. The league's nine head coaches voted the order and were not permitted to vote for their own team.
Texas Tech was slotted third in the Big 12 preseason poll for the third time since 2017. The previous two times the Red Raiders finished higher than their prediction and advanced to an NCAA regional each time. Tech spent four-straight seasons at No. 1 in the preseason poll from 2018-21 and has been positioned third the past two seasons. Prior to 2017, third was the Red Raiders' highest preseason ranking since being picked third in 2000.
The Horned Frogs, who received five first-place votes, finished two points ahead of second-place Oklahoma State (four first-place votes) in the voting. This was the fourth time in Big 12 history that two-or-fewer points in the voting separated the top two finishers, with TCU accumulating 61 to OSU's 59. The Red Raiders fell 11 points behind the Cowboys in the poll and five points better than No. 4 Texas.
National polls around the country have the Red Raiders as a consensus top 25 team, ranging from No. 16 to No. 24. Perfect Game liked Texas Tech as No. 16, followed by College Baseball News at No. 17, Baseball America at No. 23 and D1Baseball at No. 24.
Opening day in Lubbock is set for Friday, Feb. 17, against 2022 Regional qualifier Gonzaga at 2 p.m., for the first of a four-game series to kick off the season.
