Tech falls at Arizona, 14-6

The Red Raiders and Wildcats will play a pivotal Rubber Match Sunday afternoon
TUCSON, Ariz. – Despite leading 2-0 after one-half inning of play, Texas Tech Baseball fell 14-6 Saturday night to the University of Arizona at Hi Corbett Field.
On top after a Logan Hughes two-run home run, Texas Tech (14-8, 3-2 Big 12) also led 3-2 after 1.5 innings of play before seeing Arizona (8-14, 2-3 Big 12) score multiple runs in four of the first five innings of the ballgame. The Hughes blast traveled 421-feet and was his seventh home run of the season.
In the setback, catcher Matt Quintanar went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs, while DH Caden Ferraro also went 2-for-2 and walked twice.
Up 2-0 after one-half inning, Tech saw UofA score twice with two outs on a misjudged flyball in left that turned into a two-RBI triple. The base hit tied the game at two.
After the Red Raiders scored a run in the second on an RBI double from Quintanar to take a 3-2 lead, Arizona took advantage of two more misplays in the outfield to take a 5-3 lead to the third inning.
Following the lone 1-2-3 inning of the night for Big 12 Pitcher of the Year candidate Smith Bailey, Arizona added another run in the third when a two-out error by the Red Raiders led to another RBI single.
Down 6-3, the Red Raiders pulled to within 6-5 when Ferraro who doubled to lead off the fourth and came around to score one batter later, on a 418-foot home run from Quintanar. The blast pulled Tech to within 6-5.
In the fourth, Arizona used a two-out double, a two-out triple and a wild pitch to take a 9-5 advantage to the fifth.
Looking to pull back into the contest, the Red Raiders got back-to-back singles from third baseman Connor Shouse and Hughes to place the first two on with nobody out. After a strikeout put the inning's first out on the board, the Red Raiders ultimately loaded the based on a Ferraro walk.
Even in the count 2-2, the next Red Raider batter, Quintanar lifted a sac-fly that scored Shouse from third to cut the UofA lead to 9-6.
After a walk from Rusinek re-loaded the bases, Bailey was able to coax an 0-2 grounder to escape further damage.
Entering the night with an ERA of sub-3.00, Bailey was tagged for nine hits and six runs in just five innings of work. He needed 110 pitches to record the 15 outs.
In the home half of the fifth, Arizona used three more RBI singles to plate four runs. The hits gave the Wildcats a 13-6 lead. Arizona would ultimately add one more run in the seventh, to close out the Saturday victory.
