Texas Tech finishes Day One of the Jim West Challenge tied for fourth place
SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas Tech women's golf program finished Sunday's first two rounds of the Jim West Challenge tied for fourth, just two shots behind a three-way tie for first place.
The Red Raiders started hot, firing a 15-under-par 273 in the first round to take the early lead against the 12 other teams in action on Sunday. Tech shot a 2-over-par 290 as a team in round two, falling back from the lead with a 36-hole 13-under-par 563, but not far from it with Houston, Texas State and SMU tied for the lead at 15-under-par 561.
Sophomore Shannon Tan led the way once again for the Red Raiders after an impressive two rounds. Tan started the birdie train early, sinking three birdies in her first five holes. Tan would finish round one shooting 4-under-par 67, aided by five birdies. Picking up where she left off in round one, the sophomore eagled her first hole, one of three for the Red Raiders on the day. Tan would go on to birdie three more holes and finish the day 7-under-par and tied for seventh using a second-round 3-under-par 69.
Just behind Tan was sophomore Lauren Zaretsky. Like Tan, Zaretsky also started out with a birdie on her first hole in round one. Keeping with the theme, Zaretsky eagled her 11th and 15th hole in round one, capping off the eagles for the Red Raiders. The sophomore finished by firing another pair of birdies to shoot a 5-under-par 67Â in round one.Â
Continuing her work from round one, Zaretsky slung four more birdies in the second round to cap off her day by posting a 1-under-par 71 and a 6-under-par 36-hole score. She is tied for 10th.
Freshman Klara Hurtova, who at one point was tied for first midway through round one, had the most impressive first round. After birdieing her first hole, Hurtova never looked back, going on to record six birdies in the first round and match Zaretsky for the Red Raiders' lowest score posted on Sunday with a 5-under-par 67. After a difficult second round, Hurtova finished the day at even-par 144 and tied for 33rd.
The Red Raiders' round-three pairing places them with New Mexico and UNLV and will tee off between holes 4 and 6 with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
