
Engler has career night at No. 25 Iowa State

AMES, Iowa – Freshman Reagan Engler tied her career high in kills and hitting percentage, but the Texas Tech Red Raiders were defeated by the No. 25 Iowa State Cyclones, 21-25, 23-25, 17-25, on Friday night at Hilton Coliseum.
For Tech (8-10, 1-5 Big 12) Engler totaled nine slams on 12 swings for the .667 hitting clip and added two blocks in the match against Iowa State (13-3, 4-1 Big 12). Graduates Caitlin Dugan and Emily Merrick were right behind with seven kills apiece and hit .208 and .316, respectively. Senior Reese Rhodes posted her seventh double-double of the season with 21 assists and 10 digs. She recorded two blocks on the night as well.
Both Maddie Correa and Brynn Williams were second on the team with nine digs each and freshman Kate Hansen led the Red Raiders with three blocks. As a team, the Red Raiders collected their fourth-best hitting clip on the year with a .243 percentage and tallied 34 kills.
Tech started the first set on a 3-0 run thanks to a kill from Brynn Williams and an ace from Courtney O'Brien. The Red Raiders had a 7-5 lead until the Cyclones won two-straight points to even things up. A solo block by Kate Hansen gave Tech the advantage at 10-9, but ISU would win the next four points to go ahead and lead by three at the media timeout. Tech stopped the Cyclone run with a slam from Reagan Engler, then came within two on a kill by Williams. Tech went on a 3-0 run to save set point, but a Red Raider service error would give the Cyclones the first set by a 25-21 score.
The Scarlet and Black earned a 3-2 advantage to open set two on a kill from Williams and a block by Rhodes. Three ties ensued as the two teams went back-and-forth, until Iowa State won four-consecutive points for the 10-6 lead. Tech would go on a 5-1 run, highlighted by kills from Rhodes, Engler and Dugan to tie it at 15-all. It was a close set until the end, as both teams traded points. But, the Cyclones were able to hold off Tech's momentum to win the set, 25-23.
Set three was close in the beginning as both teams tied seven times before any team got to 10. Down 5-3, Tech would win four points in a row on kills from Williams and Engler and blocks from Engler and Rhodes. The Red Raiders went ahead on an ace by Rhodes, 10-9, but the Cyclones won the next three points to retake the lead. After tying the set at 12-12, Iowa State would win seven-consecutive points to lead 19-12, then hold on to that advantage to win the match with a 25-17 score.
