LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders are on the road for the second weekend in a row as they travel to Provo, Utah to face the No. 9-ranked BYU Cougars on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13-14. Friday's match will be nationally televised on ESPNU as Tech and BYU play at 8 p.m. The Saturday match is set for another 8 p.m. matchup.
The Red Raiders are taking on their second-straight ranked opponent after dropping their match to No. 25 Iowa State in Ames last Friday evening. As a team, Tech tallies 815 kills, 738 assists, 73 aces, 1,064 digs and 167.0 blocks. Caitlin Dugan leads the team with 217 kills followed by Brynn Williams with 206. Reese Rhodes leads with 438 assists and both Kate Hansen and Abby Dickinson have a team-best 12 aces apiece. On defense, Hansen leads with 84.0 blocks and Maddie Correa posts a team-leading 257 digs.
Hansen currently ranks tied for 19th in the nation and second in the Big 12 in total blocks. In addition, she ranks 58th with 1.24 blocks per set. As a team, the Red Raiders are tied for 29th in total blocks, and only behind TCU and BYU in the conference rankings.
Freshman Reagan Engler has posted a .350 hitting clip in seven matches so far this season, accounting for almost half of Tech's games. Leading the Red Raider hitters with a .262 percentage, Engler recently totaled a career high in both kills (9) and hitting percentage (.667) against Iowa State last weekend, leading the team offensively in that match.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Texas Tech and BYU have only faced one another four times in program history as the two teams are tied 2-2 in the all-time series. The last matchup between the Red Raiders and the Cougars was on Sept. 18, 1998 as Tech lost in three sets. BYU won the last two meetings with Tech's last victory against the Cougars coming on Sept. 27, 1980. The Cougars, who are ranked ninth in the newest AVCA poll, are 14-3 on the season and 3-2 in conference play. Their three losses come against No. 10 Texas and No. 13 Washington State, all in four sets. Some key wins have been over No. 5 Pittsburgh, Utah State, No. 20 Houston and No. 18 Baylor.
As a team, BYU totals 602 kills, a .273 hitting percentage, 538 assists, 81 aces, 566 digs and 147.0 blocks. The Cougars rank 11th in the nation with 2.83 blocks per set and 30th in hitting percentage. On offense, Erin Livingston leads with 230 slams and 3.97 k/s, Whitney Bower leads with 509 assists and Hannah Billeter has a team-high 24 aces. Defensively, Kamaile Hiapo tallies a team-best 209 digs and Mia Lee leads with 71.0 blocks.
